Job description

Position Overview

The role of Election Clerk is a temporary intermittent position with a maximum of 1560 hours per year. The primary responsibility is to perform routine administrative support tasks related to voter registration and election administration under close supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Under close supervision, Election Clerks perform tasks such as maintaining files, processing voter registrations, operating voting machines, and providing customer service to the public regarding registration and voting information.

Knowledge & Abilities
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized applications.
  • Efficient file maintenance and organization.
  • Standard warehouse safety procedures.
  • Basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and fractions).
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Read and compare handwritten signatures rapidly and accurately.
  • File documents accurately and rapidly (alphabetically, chronologically, or numerically).
  • Operate modern office equipment such as copy machines, computers, voting machines, and fax machines.
  • Understand and explain routine policy, procedure, and law to the general public.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with others.
  • Communicate courteously, clearly, and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
Minimum Qualifications

Six months of full‑time paid or volunteer experience, including customer relations, data entry, and general record‑keeping. Part‑time paid experience may be accumulated and pro‑rated to meet the total experience requirements.

General Qualifications & Requirements
  • Criminal history and background checks – Candidates must pass background checks, including fingerprinting and checks of criminal, credit, and reference information.
  • License requirement – A valid California driver license, Class C or higher.
  • Forklift certification – May be required for some positions.
  • Selective certification – Certain roles may require speaking or reading languages other than standard English.
  • Physical requirements – Ability to lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds from floor to approximately four feet above floor level with assistance as needed.
  • Working conditions – May work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours during election cycles, including extended shifts.
