Job description

Catholic Charities of Baltimore, Caritas House, is currently seeking an Elder Assistant, who will provide essential support to residents needing around-the-clock care due to physical or social impairments. The role involves assisting with daily living activities and medication management, while encouraging and upholding the residents’ independence and personal choice. The work schedule is Saturday & Sunday, 11:00pm – 7:00am, every other weekend.

Catholic Charities of Baltimore Caritas House is a community for seniors that provides services to help residents remain independent and safe. Our Elder Assistants assist with activities of daily living including dressing, personal hygiene, housekeeping, and laundry. They support residents who are physically and/or socially impaired and require 24-hour oversight, fostering independence and freedom of choice.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Assist with daily activities such as dressing, bathing, personal hygiene, device care, phone use, housekeeping, laundry, and mail management.
  2. Accurately document all medication-related activities on the Medication Administration Record (MAR), following residence policy.
  3. Perform controlled substance counts with appropriate CMTs at shift start and end.
  4. Seek guidance from supervisor or Nurse Manager if unsure about medication or treatment administration.
  5. Monitor for environmental safety hazards and dispose of waste per policies and OSHA regulations.
  6. Follow standard precautions to control infection spread.
  7. Document incidents, errors, and accidents involving residents, staff, or visitors, ensuring timely reporting and follow-up.
  8. Support dining and housekeeping tasks, including assisting during meals and maintaining cleanliness.
  9. Maintain cooperative relationships with staff and other departments.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience Requirements:
  • Ability to read, write, follow instructions, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Customer service-oriented with ability to work effectively with elderly and diverse populations.
  • Flexibility in working hours to meet resident care needs.
  • Reliable transportation for punctuality and attendance.
Certification/Licensure:
  • Certified Medical Technician (CMT) in good standing with Maryland Board of Nursing, OR
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in good standing with Maryland Board of Nursing, OR
  • Two years of elder care experience with demonstrated competency evaluation within the first 7 days of employment.
Additional Certifications:
  • First Aid Certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Food handling certification within 6 months of employment.

  • Sufficient hearing and vision, with or without correction.
  • Potential exposure to body fluids, infections, odors, resident behaviors, and cleaning chemicals.
