Job Duties
Maintains and cleans equipment, checking that equipment is working properly; reports problems to supervisor.
Performs routine EKGs on assigned nursing units and responds to stat requests as necessary.
Ensures EKG tracings are appropriately labeled and checks the quality of tracings before giving to the cardiologist for interpretation.
Inspects the phlebotomy cart for expiration dates and supplies, and fills in the daily inspection checklist before use.
Verifies proper patient identification by checking the patient’s ID wristband with requisition slips, maintaining correct identification throughout the process.
Draws blood from patients, labels specimens in the presence of the patient, records the tests requested, and files paperwork as required.
Records phlebotomy requisitions on log sheets (STAT, OP, etc.), ensuring complete patient identification including diagnosis.
Assists laboratory techs with receiving specimens in Paragon.
Centrifuges specimens according to instructions.
Maintains the outpatient phlebotomy room and supply room in a sanitary condition, fully stocked, and organized.
Responsible for safety of equipment, labels sharps collectors, and manages medical waste disposal.
Stores the phlebotomy cart properly at shift end.
Answers phone calls in the laboratory and manages drop-off specimens.
Processes specimens in Paragon, including centrifuging and delivering STAT specimens.
Follows Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures.
Provides excellent customer service, maintaining professionalism, respect, and patience.
Adheres to departmental policies, safety, environmental, and infection control standards, and the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct.
Understands and aligns with the Medical Center’s Mission, Vision, and Values.

Performs other related duties as required.
Basic Competencies
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Certification: EKG certification preferred; Phlebotomist training required. Certification or competency from previous employer as a Phlebotomist preferred.
Experience: One year of EKG and Phlebotomy experience preferred.
Skills: Manual dexterity, time management, computer literacy, organizational skills, good communication, interpersonal skills, and proficiency in English.
Job Setting/Physical Demands: Works in well-lit, temperature-controlled areas, requiring long periods of standing, with exposure to various hazards. Must adhere to safety protocols and OSHA standards. Shift rotation and occasional physical activities like bending and walking are required.
