Qualifications

Job Duties
  1. Maintain and clean equipment, checking that it is working properly; report problems to supervisor.
  2. Perform routine EKGs on assigned nursing units and respond to stat requests as necessary.
  3. Ensure EKG tracings are appropriately labeled, check the quality of tracings before giving to the cardiologist for interpretation.
  4. Inspect the phlebotomy cart for expiration dates and supplies; fill in the daily inspection checklist before use.
  5. Verify proper patient identification by checking ID wristbands with requisition slips, maintaining correct identification throughout processing.
  6. Draw blood from patients and deliver specimens to the laboratory.
  7. Label all blood specimens in the presence of the patient, record tests in logbooks, and file paperwork as required.
  8. Record phlebotomy requisitions on appropriate logs, ensuring complete patient identification.
  9. Assist laboratory technicians with receiving specimens in Paragon.
  10. Centrifuge specimens according to instructions.
  11. Maintain the outpatient phlebotomy room and supply room in a sanitary condition, fully stocked, and organized.
  12. Responsible for the safety and proper storage of equipment and supplies, including pager and handheld devices.
  13. Label and prepare sharps collectors for disposal, and manage medical waste following protocols.
  14. Store the phlebotomy cart appropriately at the end of shifts.
  15. Answer phone calls in the laboratory and receive drop-off specimens promptly.
  16. Process specimens in Paragon, including centrifugation and delivery of STAT specimens.
  17. Follow Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures.
  18. Provide excellent customer service, demonstrating respect, professionalism, patience, and helpfulness.
  19. Adhere to departmental policies, safety standards, and the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct.
  20. Understand and align with the Medical Center’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
Other Job Duties

Perform other related duties as required.

Basic Competencies
  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Certification: EKG certification preferred; Phlebotomist training required. Certification or competency from previous employment is acceptable.
  • Experience: One year of EKG and Phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Skills: Manual dexterity, time management, computer literacy, organization, communication, interpersonal skills, proficiency in English.
Job Setting/Physical Demands

Work in well-lit, temperature-controlled areas; requires long periods of standing; moderate noise level; fast-paced environment; shift rotation; exposure to biological and hazardous materials; adherence to safety and OSHA standards; occasional bending, reaching, and walking.
