Job Duties
  1. Maintains and cleans equipment, checking that it is working properly; reports problems to supervisor.
  2. Performs routine EKGs on assigned nursing units and responds to stat requests as necessary.
  3. Assures EKG tracings are appropriately labeled and checks quality of tracing before giving to cardiologist for interpretation.
  4. Inspects the phlebotomy cart for expiration and adequate supply and fills in the daily inspection checklist before using the cart.
  5. Assures proper patient identification by checking the patient’s ID wristband with the requisition slips.
  6. Draws blood from patients and brings specimens to the appropriate laboratory section.
  7. Labels all blood specimens collected in the presence of the patient and writes the test requested in a logbook.
  8. Records phlebotomy requisitions on appropriate log sheets.
  9. Assists laboratory techs in receiving dropped-off specimens.
  10. Centrifuges specimens appropriately according to instructions.
  11. Maintains the outpatient phlebotomy room in a sanitary condition.
  12. Maintains the phlebotomy supply room in a sanitary condition and stocks shelves properly.
  13. Responsible for the safety of the pager and handheld equipment assigned to each phlebotomist.
  14. Labels sharp collectors and prepares them for discard when ¾ full.
  15. Collects medical waste from various laboratory sections and logs them as required.
  16. Stores the phlebotomy cart according to the numerical arrangement in the assigned storage room.
  17. Answers phone calls received in the laboratory.
  18. Receives all drop-off specimens in a timely manner.
  19. Delivers STAT specimens to the processing area alerting Med tech.
  20. Understands and follows Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures.
  21. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs.
  22. Understands and adheres to the Medical Center’s Code of Conduct.
Other Job Duties

Performs other related duties as required.

Basic Competencies

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Certification: EKG certification preferred; Phlebotomist training required.

Experience: One year of EKG and Phlebotomy experience preferred.

Skills: Manual dexterity, time management, computer literacy, good organizational skills, and communication skills.

Job Setting/Physical Demands

Works in well-lighted, temperature-controlled patient-treatment areas. Requires standing for long periods; work is fast-paced. Subject to exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other hazardous materials.
