- Plan and teach 8th grade mathematics and assigned accelerated math courses that include high school content, including Geometry as applicable to the district program.
- Use clear learning targets, coherent lesson sequences, mathematical models, discussion, and meaningful practice to develop conceptual understanding, fluency, and reasoning.
- Provide appropriate depth and challenge in accelerated courses while identifying and addressing gaps in prerequisite knowledge.
- Assess student learning, provide timely feedback, maintain accurate records, and communicate progress to students and families.
- Differentiate instruction and collaborate with colleagues to provide enrichment, intervention, and supports through the district's MTSS processes.
- Implement students' IEPs and Section 504 plans as applicable and coordinate with special education and other support staff.
- Create a safe, respectful, and productive classroom that encourages students to explain ideas, critique reasoning, and persevere with challenging problems.
- Collaborate with grade-level and mathematics colleagues on curriculum, assessment, course alignment, and transitions to high school mathematics.
- Use instructional technology and materials to support mathematical exploration and learning; protect district equipment and resources.
- Participate in professional learning, team meetings, and building or district committees as assigned; respond appropriately to emergencies and perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the Principal or designee.
Qualifications
Position Summary:
The Eighth Grade Mathematics Teacher plans and delivers strong mathematics instruction for 8th grade students, including advanced math programming for accelerated courses with high school content such as Geometry. The teacher builds conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, mathematical reasoning, and problem-solving while responding to the needs of learners at different points in their mathematical development.
Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications, required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with Endorsements:
- Middle School Mathematics Endorsement (Gr. 6-8) required
- High School Mathematics Endorsement (Gr. 9-12) required
- ESL preferred
- LBS 1 preferred
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; a degree in mathematics or a related field is preferred.
- Successful experience teaching middle school mathematics; experience teaching accelerated mathematics or high school mathematics content preferred.
- Strong command of middle grades mathematics, Algebra, and Geometry, including the ability to connect prerequisite ideas to advanced concepts.
- Ability to plan high-quality instruction aligned with district curriculum and applicable Illinois Learning Standards, including the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
- Ability to use formative and summative evidence to adjust instruction, provide intervention or enrichment, and monitor student growth.
- Ability to design appropriately challenging tasks, facilitate mathematical discussion, and support multiple approaches to solving problems.
- Commitment to positive relationships with students, family communication, collaboration, cultural competency, and equitable access to rigorous mathematics.
- Strong organization, classroom management, communication, professional judgment, and purposeful use of instructional technology.
- Demonstrates an interest in contributing to building and District committees and/or extracurricular activities
