Job Summary

Under the direction of the HMM Technical Operations Supervisor, Principal Technicians serve as lead technicians for HMM and are responsible for performing all technician duties, assigning work schedules, and providing guidance to less experienced technicians. A thorough understanding of the regulations governing hazardous waste transportation and disposal is required.

Department Description

The Office of Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) is responsible for promoting environmental stewardship and a safe workplace at UCSF while ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to occupational safety and the environment. Hazardous Materials Management (HMM) within EH&S provides the following services to UCSF:

• Hazardous chemical waste collection and disposal
• Medical waste collection and disposal
• Receipt of radioactive material
• Radioactive waste collection and disposal
• Controlled substance receipt and disposal
• Radioactive contamination monitoring
• Calibration of radiation survey meters
• Emergency shower and eyewash testing
• Fume hood testing
• Support services for patients receiving radiation therapies

Duties & Essential Job Functions

• Oversight of Chemical and Radioactive Waste Ship Outs – Prepare waste inventories; oversee vendor packaging; sign manifests; ensure 90‑day waste limits; maintain records of waste shipped offsite.
• Team Lead Duties – Assign daily schedules; lead team tasks; train technicians; maintain assignment records; communicate issues to supervisor; assist with regulatory reports.
• Chemical Waste Operations – Collect hazardous chemical waste; store and label by hazard class; consolidate for shipping; perform weekly facility inspections; keep accurate records.
• Radiation Contamination Monitoring – Conduct surveys and wipe tests; analyze results; decontaminate areas; maintain records; report monthly totals.
• Receipt of Radioactive Material – Inspect and survey packages; record receipts; ensure user approval; maintain equipment; deliver isotopes to satellite campuses.
• Support Services for Patients Receiving Radiation Therapy – Prepare rooms; protect surfaces; handle radioactive waste; perform surveys and decontamination; maintain detailed records; coordinate with nursing staff.
• Radioactive Waste Operations – Collect, segregate, consolidate, and analyze waste; perform inventory; schedule vendor pickups; communicate issues; maintain records.
• Safety Equipment Testing – Test eyewash, shower, fume hood, and ventilation systems; report deficiencies; prepare monthly compliance reports; oversee repair status.
• Medical Waste Collection – Collect and ship medical waste; ensure proper packaging; sign manifests; maintain housekeeping and security.
• Controlled Substances Services – Receive, store, and distribute controlled substances; maintain records; dispose per regulations; update RIO records.
• Calibration of Radiation Survey Equipment – Calibrate meters annually; perform repairs; ship out for manufacturer calibration; maintain calibration log.
• Other Tasks – Assist with PPE, laundry, vehicle maintenance, emergency response support, and miscellaneous departmental needs.

Required Qualifications

• High school graduate or GED with four years of experience in an environmental health and safety program, or at least two years of college with appropriate science courses and three years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least two years of experience managing hazardous waste.
• Current 24‑hour HAZWOPER certification.
• DOT Hazmat employee training within the last three years.
• Strong working knowledge of chemical, radioactive, and biological hazards; ability to assess hazards and determine proper storage and handling procedures.
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements for storage, transportation, disposal, and record‑keeping of hazardous, radioactive, medical, and controlled substance waste.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills; proficient in computers for email, word processing, and record‑keeping.
• Good driving record; possession of a California driver’s license.
• Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and work in wide temperature ranges and laboratory/waste processing environments.
• Fingerprinting and background check required (critical position).
