Job summary

Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Company is seeking a Safety Specialist to support Safety & Risk Mitigation programs across operations, with a strong field presence at facilities and in operations. Travel regionally is required to cover multiple locations.

Qualifications

Job Location: Des Moines Branch - Des Moines, IA 50321 Position Type: Full Time Job Category: Human Resources Overview/Function: The Safety Specialist supports the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Company's Safety & Risk Mitigation programs across company operations. This position serves as a field-based safety resource to operations leadership and employees, helping ensure consistent implementation of company safety programs, regulatory requirements, and established safe work practices.

The Safety Specialist will maintain a strong presence at company facilities and in field operations, providing coaching, conducting inspections and assessments, supporting incident investigations, delivering safety training, monitoring corrective actions, and assisting locations with implementation of company safety initiatives.

Major Responsibilities
Field Safety Support
  • Promote and reinforce culture of safety and continuous improvement while maintaining a regular field presence.
  • Conduct routine facility, warehouse, production, fleet, and operational safety coaching audits and inspections.
  • Support safety committee and help drive employee engagement activities.
  • Identify and coach teams on unsafe conditions, behaviors, processes, and emerging risks, and work collaboratively with teams to develop appropriate corrective actions.
  • Provide practical safety guidance and coaching to employees, supervisors, and managers.
  • Assist with implementation and consistent application of company safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Monitor corrective actions resulting from inspections, incidents, audits, and other safety activities, and program effectiveness.
  • Working across teams, identify recurring or systemic concerns and trends, and elevate significant issues to the Safety & Risk manager.
  • Other duties as required.
Incident Investigation & Claims Support
  • Respond to and assist in investigations of employee injuries, vehicle incidents and property damage, near misses, and other safety-related events.
  • Help identify immediate, contributing, and root causes of incidents.
  • Support development and tracking of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support workers' compensation and return-to-work activities.
  • Identify incident trends and opportunities for preventive intervention.
Safety Training & Employee Development
  • Assist with development and revision of safety programs and training and reinforce understanding of responsibilities within the company's safety management system.
  • Perform initial and recurring safety training where applicable.
  • Assist in conducting effective safety meetings, toolbox talks, and other employee safety communications.
  • Provide coaching and refresher training following incidents, observed deficiencies, or identified performance gaps.
  • Support implementation of company-wide safety initiatives and awareness campaigns.
Regulatory Compliance
  • Assist with applicable OSHA, DOT, and other federal, state, and local safety compliance requirements, and support OSHA recordkeeping and required documentation.
  • Conduct periodic compliance verification of company programs and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with regulatory inspections or inquiries as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of regulatory developments relevant to company operations.
Safety Equipment & Emergency Preparedness
  • Assist with periodic assessments of first-aid supplies, AEDs, emergency equipment, fire protection, and other safety resources.
  • Support facility emergency preparedness activities, including emergency drills and planning.
  • Identify deficiencies and assist in developing and completing corrective actions.
  • Participate in emergency response and significant incident activities when requested.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Associates degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health and Safety, Industrial Technology, Emergency Management, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant operational safety experience.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA general industry safety requirements is needed.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with all organizational levels.
  • Ability to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and recommend practical corrective actions.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and follow-up skills.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple assignments and priorities.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company insurance eligibility requirements, with the ability and willingness to regularly travel to support multiple locations.
  • Experience in distribution, warehousing, manufacturing, transportation, beverage, or similar operations.
  • Experience conducting workplace inspections and incident investigations is highly desired.
  • Experience delivering employee safety training.
  • OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour General Industry certification is strongly desired.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED instructor or provider certification.

The role requires the ability to walk and stand for extended periods; climb stairs; access operational work areas; bend, stoop, and reach as necessary to conduct inspections and assessments; and safely work in environments that may include temperature extremes, noise, moving vehicles, powered industrial trucks, and other typical industrial or distribution hazards. This role is considered a safety sensitive position.

Frequent regional travel is required, corresponding with Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Company's territory, consisting primarily of same-day travel with occasional overnight travel based upon business need, significant incident occurrences, training needs, or special projects.

The role is expected to maintain a visible and consistent presence across assigned company locations rather than functioning primarily as an office-based safety resource.

The role is focused on weekdays (Monday-Friday) however some evening and weekend work may be required.
