Description

The EHS Specialist is a hands-on leader with a primary focus of executing Halocarbon’s EHS management systems, ensuring compliance with SCDHEC, EPA, and applicable industry standards. The EHS Specialist will have opportunities to enhance their skills in communications, presentations, project management, and feedback. The EHS Specialist role models EHS/PSM excellence through participation in and compliance with Halocarbon policies, management systems, procedures, teams, and training. They will serve as a change agent to stimulate culture changes, while applying Halocarbon values in engaging the Halocarbon team.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Identifying, assessing, and mitigating EHS related risk (e.g. Spot checks, PSSR, MOC, Risk matrix, and JSA) and issuing safe work permits (e.g. Take 5, confined space, first break, hot work).
  • Providing high quality individual/small group feedback through spot checks, audits, safety contacts, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
  • Simplifying, maintaining, and auditing compliance with Halocarbon’s Management System.
  • Updating assigned policy, procedures, and associated training materials.
  • Develop and deliver EHS/PSM/Emergency Response (ER)/Security training, as well as maintain training LMS, safety meetings, training matrix, and E-zone.
  • Reviewing and executing EHS department PMs, or tasks assigned to EHS. Execution includes managing contractors, PO’s and gaining approvals. (Examples include: First aid station, safety shower evaluation, elevated work / anchor points, fixed / portable ladder evaluations, elevated work equipment and gas monitoring equipment maintenance).
  • Developing, capturing and classifying leading and lagging indicators.
  • Leading, reviewing, conducting, documenting, tracking, communicating and closing out incident investigations using the EHS Investigation Tool.
  • Actively lead and participate in the site safety committee and site safety subcommittees, acting as a catalyst.
  • Actively lead and guide ER leaders in emergency response team membership, EOC, ER/Security Drills, headcount system, training programs, ER equipment, and interfacing with local ER agencies (e.g. NAPS and LEPC).
  • Maintain the approved PPE list, PPE matrix / risk assessment, and PPE evaluations.
  • Promote the health of employees through effective employee physicals, case management, IH assessments, and providing first aid / guidance to first responders on injury care. Manage workers compensation cases, reporting, and documentation with HR.
  • Develop, update and execute industrial hygiene plan & risk assessment with input from IH consultant and EHS Director, as well as conduct sampling (e.g. IH sampling).
  • Completing assigned skills evaluations, self-study, training, assigned readings and exercises.
  • Achieving and maintaining applicable certifications. (Examples include: First Aid/CPR/AED, Forklift Trainer, Hazmat Specialist / Trainer, Waste Water Operator, DOT Shipper, Hazmat Shipper, and Certified Safety Technician).
  • Maintain assigned permits, reports, and/or regulatory licenses (Example include: OHSA 300 logs, security reporting, radio license, ATF industrial alcohol user permit, and SCDEC LQG ID).
  • Provide after-hours and evening support and response to the plant.
  • Executing other assigned projects and tasks.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • EHS/PSM/Emergency Response/Security Management System Leadership – Risk assessment and mitigation; auditing; providing guidance; program development and maintenance; implementing improvements; delivering training; and recordkeeping.
  • Lead, participate in, and review incident investigations to ensure the root cause is determined and that corrective actions are developed and implemented to prevent recurrence of related exposures.
  • Complete assigned projects.
  • Actively participate in the site safety committee or a site safety subcommittee.
  • Complete assigned learning / development plan.

Requirements

Education and/or Experience – List the minimum level of education and/or experience required to perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.

  • High School Diploma, General Educational Development (GED) or equivalent. Preferred university degree or professional certificate.
  • Commitment to work towards technical and professional certifications.
  • Industrial / manufacturing experience (prefer chemical).
  • Must be able to read/write at high school level.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.

Safety/Essential Functions

  • Must be able to climb and descend stairs and ladders.
  • Must be capable of and willing to learn, new skills and tasks.
  • Must be capable of working where chemical odors may exist at permissible threshold limits of exposure.
  • Must be able to evacuate the plant, reporting to appropriate assigned muster point, in the event of an emergency or drill.
  • Must be able to sit and use a computer for extended periods of time.
