Job summary

Sun Chemical in Valparaiso, IN seeks an experienced EHS leader to drive site compliance and sustainability initiatives. You will develop, train, and enforce EHS policies, partner with site leadership, and oversee PSM and RMP programs to ensure regulatory adherence.

The role focuses on inspections, investigations, audits, and performance metrics, coordinating with corporate EHS and other plant teams for ongoing improvements in a highly regulated manufacturing environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or related field.
• 5+ years’ EHS experience in manufacturing.
• 3+ years’ experience with PSM and/or RMP facilities.
• Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance systems and occupational safety programs.
• Must be able to lead directly and by influence.

POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

Drive continuous site EHS, security, and sustainability performance improvement by developing, implementing and training on site and company EHS policies and procedures. Ensure site EHS compliance through continuous improvement activities such as thorough inspections, investigations, audits, behavioral based observations, corrective actions, and implementing best practices. Works closely with a network of other EHS professionals and plant department heads as part of the plant leadership team (PLT).

The Valparaiso site is a highly regulated site, featuring process safety management (PSM) and risk management plan (RMP) requirements along with a wastewater program among other regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Ensure that all activities are performed in compliance to local, state, and federal EHS regulatory requirements.
• Serve as EHS representative on the plant leadership team and for external visits and audits.
• Upgrade and maintain PSM & RMP programs and compliance.
• Complete routine regulatory reports and filings: UIC, Tier II, TRI, RMP and others; maintain site permits as needed.
• Ensure EHS systems, procedures, and performance metrics exist, are understood, are implemented, are effective, and being adhered to.
• Analyze and evaluate EHS performance. Develop strategic improvement plans in collaboration with PLT and corporate EHS to meet or exceed plant, and/or corporate goals.
• Lead, coordinate, and conduct plant EHS & Security training, record keeping, and ensure it is effective.
• Lead and track incident and injury investigations and resolutions including managing projects.
• Create, review, and/or evaluate from an EHS perspective, process changes and MOC’s.
• Work with wastewater generators to characterize and qualify their waste for Class 1 deep-well injection in accordance with U.S. EPA regulations.
• Monitor wastewater and solid waste disposal operations ensuring RCRA compliance and efficient operation.
• Develop and lead the sustainability program.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, etc)

• 5+ years’ EHS experience in a manufacturing environment
• 3+ years’ experience working in a PSM and/or RMP facility
• Strong expertise in regulatory compliance systems, regulatory permitting processes, and occupational safety programs.
• Ability to visualize, design, develop, and implement systematic EHS improvements.
• Proficient user of MS Office products
• Must be able to lead directly and by influence
• Strong organizational, prioritization, and time management skills to meet multiple deadlines with minimal supervision are critical.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Master’s degree in a related field (Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, etc)
• 7+ years’ experience in heavy industry such as chemical, paper, refining, etc.
• 5+ years’ experience working in a PSM and RMP facility
• 3+ years’ experience leading others
• EHS related certifications such as OSHA-501, ASP, CSP, MSP, etc
• Underground injection well technology experience
• Certified wastewater operator
