Tate & Lyle in Sycamore, IL is seeking an experienced EHS Manager to lead environmental, health and safety initiatives on a busy manufacturing site. The role emphasizes coaching on the plant floor, regulatory compliance, incident investigations, and building a world-class safety culture.

You will partner with plant leadership, Operations, Maintenance, HR and corporate EHS to drive risk reduction, ensure OSHA and environmental compliance, and develop proactive safety programs across the site.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related field.
  • High school diploma or GED required; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 5 years of EHS experience in manufacturing, industrial, food production, chemical, or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety management systems.
  • Experience leading incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Experience leading compliance audits and corrective action programs.
  • Strong understanding of workers' compensation processes and case management.
  • Professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, CIH, OHST preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Safety Leadership & Culture Champion and lead the site's overall safety strategy and management system.
  • Regulatory Compliance: OSHA and environmental regulations; lead programs like Hearing Conservation, Industrial Hygiene, Hazard Communication, Confined Space Entry, Lockout/Tagout, etc.
  • Incident Management & Risk Reduction: lead investigations, root-cause analyses, and action plans; monitor safety metrics.
  • Workers' Compensation & Case Management: manage claims and returns-to-work programs.
  • Auditing & Management Systems: coordinate ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 audits and corrective actions.
  • Coaching & Leadership Development: train and develop managers and site safety teams.

About the Role

The EHS Manager provides technical safety and health leadership through the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of site safety programs, systems, and objectives. This position partners closely with plant leadership, operations teams, and corporate safety resources to ensure compliance, reduce risk, and foster a proactive culture of safety accountability. The role requires approximately 60% of time spent in plant operations providing direct support, coaching, auditing, and engagement with employees and leaders.

What You'll Do
  • Safety Leadership & Culture Champion and lead the site's overall safety strategy and management system. Develop and execute programs that deliver year-over-year reductions in injury and incident rates. Drive employee engagement and accountability in safety programs at all organizational levels. Partner with site leadership and corporate EHS teams to strengthen and sustain a proactive safety culture. Promote behavioral safety principles and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Regulatory ComplianceEnsure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Maintain compliance with OSHA standards and environmental regulations. Lead and support programs including: Hearing Conservation Industrial Hygiene Hazard Communication Confined Space Entry Lockout/Tagout Contractor Safety Hot Work Permitting Emergency Preparedness Safety Training and Certification Programs.
  • Incident Management & Risk ReductionLead incident investigations and root cause analyses. Develop and monitor corrective and preventive action plans. Analyze trends and safety metrics to identify opportunities for improvement. Conduct risk assessments and implement risk mitigation strategies. Manage OSHA recordkeeping and reporting requirements, including OSHA 300 logs.
  • Workers' Compensation & Case ManagementManage workers' compensation claims and coordinate with medical providers and insurance partners. Support return-to-work and transitional duty programs. Track injury cases and ensure timely reporting and documentation.
  • Auditing & Management SystemsLead and coordinate third‑party ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 audits. Conduct internal safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews. Ensure corrective actions are effectively implemented and sustained. Maintain EHS documentation, records, and reporting systems.
  • Coaching & Leadership DevelopmentCoach and support managers, supervisors, and employees in developing effective safety practices. Deliver safety training and educational programs. Facilitate safety committees and site‑wide safety teams. Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on EHS‑related matters.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • High school diploma or GED required; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 5 years of EHS experience in manufacturing, industrial, food production, chemical, or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety management systems.
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Experience leading compliance audits and corrective action programs.
  • Strong understanding of workers' compensation processes and case management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional certifications such as: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Associate Safety Professional (ASP) Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST).
  • Experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
  • Experience in food manufacturing or highly regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience implementing behavior-based safety programs.

Physical & Work Environment

This role operates in both office and manufacturing environments. The position requires: Regular walking throughout the manufacturing facility. Frequent climbing of stairs and access to elevated work areas. Ability to wear required PPE in production environments. Exposure to manufacturing equipment, ingredients, noise, and varying environmental conditions. Approximately 60% of time spent on the production floor supporting operations.

Tate & Lyle complies with all local/state regulations requiring salary range transparency. When determining final compensation, we take into consideration: skillset, job scope, knowledge, prior experience, cost of living, market data, budget availability, and other factors as permitted by law. The pay range for this position is $92,300.00 - $123,100.00 - $153,900.00 USD Annual and will be determined based on the candidate's experience, qualifications, and overall skill set.
