Company Overview

Zeno Power is the leading developer of nuclear batteries — compact power systems that provide reliable, clean energy in frontier environments. By harnessing the heat from radioisotopes, Zeno’s batteries power critical missions on Earth, in space, and at sea. To bring this technology to market by 2027, Zeno is seeking out purpose-driven and innovative professionals who are comfortable working in a startup environment. Team members will have a direct impact in enabling commercial and national security missions from the depths of our oceans, to the surface of the moon, and in austere environments here on Earth. Zeno is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to attracting, retaining, and developing a highly qualified, diverse, and dedicated work force. We do not discriminate in hiring on the basis of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, color, religious creed, national origin, physical or mental disability, protected Veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local law.

Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager

Zeno is seeking a highly motivated EHS Manager to support the mission-oriented efforts of fabricating and bringing to market Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) technologies. Reporting directly to Zeno’s site leadership, the EHS Manager will own the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Zeno’s conventional Environmental, Health, and Safety programs at our Radiological Facility in Sunol, California, working in close partnership with the Radiation Protection team.

In this role you will:

  • Be responsible for Zeno’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs, policies, and procedures at Zeno’s Radiological Facility in Sunol, CA in compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, EPA, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Serve as the facility’s subject matter expert for industrial safety, occupational health, environmental compliance, and hazardous materials management.
  • Partner with the Radiation Protection team to integrate conventional safety and environmental controls with radiological work planning and controls.
  • Lead hazard identification, job safety analyses, and risk assessments for facility operations, construction, and maintenance activities.
  • Manage environmental permitting, reporting, and compliance activities, including air, water, and hazardous waste programs, as appropriate.
  • Develop and lead emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire/life safety, spill response, and evacuation procedures.
  • Conduct EHS training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action tracking for safety and environmental events.
  • Manage industrial hygiene monitoring programs, including noise, air quality, and chemical exposure assessments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Project Management, Engineering, Regulatory, Quality, and Operations) to ensure EHS requirements are integrated into work planning.
  • Participate in self-assessments, audits, and regulatory inspections as needed, and serve as a point of contact for OSHA/Cal-OSHA and environmental regulators.
  • Maintain EHS metrics, dashboards, and reporting for facility and company leadership.
Key Qualifications and Skills
  • B.S. in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Physical Science, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 7+ years of relevant EHS experience, including experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or regulated facility environment, with a strong preference for EHS experience related to operations in radiation facilities
  • Working knowledge of OSHA, Cal/OSHA, EPA, and California environmental regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing EHS management systems and programs.
  • Strong understanding of hazard analysis, industrial hygiene, and emergency preparedness principles.
  • Perform effectively under pressure while consistently meeting deadlines in a dynamic, rapidly evolving environment.
  • Capable of managing and supporting numerous simultaneous tasks that require a multi-disciplinary approach.
