Job summary

Job description

Position Summary

The EHS Manager is responsible for developing a safety culture on the project that anticipates construction risk and mitigates hazards to prevent injury to personnel or damage to the structure. The role involves promoting, developing, implementing, verifying, and improving risk-reduction through planning, EHS programs, incident reporting, trend analysis, team cohesion, training, craft recognition programs, and continuous improvement toward a positive safety culture.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, execute, and improve EHS policies and initiatives to create an injury‑free environment.
  • Serve as primary decision maker for project safety, compliance, risk control, claims management, and environmental planning.
  • Collaborate with superintendents, project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to integrate schedule, EHS, and quality.
  • Coordinate with supervisors and management to implement EHS policies in compliance with company policy, customer requirements, and regulatory agencies (DOT, OSHA, EPA, MSHA, etc.).
  • Analyze work requirements and conditions to propose changes that increase safety and enhance training while maintaining efficiency.
  • Manage safety orientation program and track training on EHS and regulatory topics to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure required forms are compiled and filed (e.g., OSHA 300), and PPE is provided and properly used.
  • Investigate injury accidents; work with HR and workers’ compensation carriers to support quick return to work.
  • Perform risk analysis and develop risk‑management plans; partner on claims resolution.
  • Track, log, and notify stakeholders of EHS successes, updates, incidents, and program progress.
  • Assist in other duties as assigned to achieve team objectives.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate, BS, or MS degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.
  • 8–12 years of EHS management experience in the construction industry.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, 29 CFR 1926 and OSHA 30‑Hour Construction certification.
  • Proven ability to train, influence, and motivate team members using excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse organization of employees.
  • Excellent time‑management and organizational skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CHST, OSHT, or equivalent certification (in lieu of a B.S.).
  • OSHA 500‑series courses.
Physical Requirements

Work is performed on an active construction site and requires standing or walking for long periods. The position may involve the use of standard office equipment and occasional movement of equipment up to 50lbs.

Travel Requirements

Ability to travel to company offices and job sites; some driving is required for all Fortis positions.
