Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager

Salary Range: $95,000 - $115,000
Location: San Luis Obispo, California

A growing specialty chemicals manufacturer is seeking an experienced EHS Manager to lead environmental, health, and safety programs across the facility. This individual will drive regulatory compliance, process safety, employee training, and continuous improvement initiatives while partnering with site leadership to strengthen safety culture and support operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the site resource for Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) compliance, regulations, and best practices.
  • Prepare and maintain EHS data, records, and documentation required for internal reporting and regulatory submissions.
  • Research and interpret regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain EHS policies, procedures, programs, and training initiatives.
  • Lead new hire and contractor orientation programs, employee training, and monthly safety meetings.
  • Administer hazardous waste management, California Accidental Release Program (CalARP), air permitting, groundwater, SWPPP, and SPCC compliance programs.
  • Coordinate and oversee Process Safety Management (PSM) and Occupational Medical Surveillance programs.
  • Direct plant safety initiatives, Emergency Response Teams, crisis communication planning, and emergency response drills.
  • Conduct facility audits, inspections, plant observations, risk assessments, PPE assessments, and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs).
  • Track, document, and drive corrective actions resulting from audits, inspections, observations, and compliance reviews.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) efforts.
  • Manage OSHA consultation activities, support customer audits, and participate in corporate EHS and RC14001 audit programs.
  • Maintain safety equipment inspection programs, including fire extinguishers, fire protection systems, spill response equipment, eyewash stations, and safety showers.
  • Partner with operations, maintenance, engineering, and site leadership to advance EHS objectives and support capital projects.
  • Ensure effective management of PPE inventories, permit systems, EHS projects, and departmental resources.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Compliance, Engineering, Process Safety, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the chemical manufacturing industry.
  • Working knowledge of chemical manufacturing processes and operations.
  • Experience conducting audits and developing corrective and preventive action (CAPA) programs.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA, DOT, environmental regulations, and EHS compliance requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, initiative, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to travel as required, both locally and nationally.

  • Maintain effective working relationships with employees, leadership, vendors, customers, and regulatory agencies.

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, communicate effectively, and use standard office equipment.
  • Occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
