Job summary

BD USA CT – Canaan is seeking an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) professional to lead on-site safety, environmental compliance, and sustainability initiatives. You will serve as deputy EHS Leader and partner with cross-functional teams to protect people and the environment.

This role emphasizes root cause investigations, regulatory liaison, and driving culture change through safety programs, lean processes, and the company’s Total Rewards package.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Environmental Engineering, Environment Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Process Engineering, or equivalent
  • 3 years experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment
  • Has or pursuing auditing certification

Responsibilities

  • Be the center of all Environmental, Health, and Safety initiatives on-site
  • Serve as deputy EHS Leader and cover for the EHS Leader when away
  • Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations to prevent incidents
  • Act as a trusted Subject Matter Expert within the EHS Team
  • Join equipment project teams as the EHS expert from concept to operation
  • Lead site safety and sustainability campaigns to foster a positive culture
  • Represent the site with regulatory authorities and insurers on EHS topics
  • Maintain and grow technical safety knowledge in areas like machine guarding and LOTO

  • Shape the Future: Join new equipment project teams as the EHS expert, influencing design and implementation from concept through to operational stage
  • Lead with Influence: Become an influential leader in site safety and sustainability campaigns, inspiring others to embrace a culture of safety excellence
  • Be Our Voice: Represent the site in interactions with regulatory authorities and insurance companies on technical EHS topics
  • Master Technical Safety: Maintain and grow your technical expertise in critical areas like Machine Guarding, Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), and other essential safety programs
  • Drive Sustainability: Stay connected to site Sustainability targets and projects, ensuring we achieve our environmental goals and make a positive impact
  • Champion Certification: Be a core contributor to our ISO 14001 certification efforts
  • Collaborate Across Programs: Participate in various EHS programs as needed

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering, Environment Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Process Engineering, or equivalent, preferred.
  • 3 years experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Has or willing to work towards, an auditing certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience leading EHS projects and teams
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with people at all levels and in various functions including technical staff, business team leaders, and union personnel.
  • Effective skills in the areas of counseling, coaching, and influencing.
  • Demonstrate understanding of federal and state safety and environmental laws.
  • The ability to identify and evaluate workplace hazards and environmental issues.
  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment including interactions with technical staff, operation leaders, and contract personnel.
  • Ability to lead a project or technical team and lead teams virtually.
  • Ability to challenge the organization in a manner that maintains trust and respect.
  • Ability to build business partnerships across and between functional groups.
  • Ability to accept and respond to changes and challenges in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrated capability to analyze problems and provide accurate solutions.
  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to constructively resolve conflicts.
  • High energy and passion for excellence, adaptability, resilience, and taking action.
  • Knowledge of standard computer programs and databases (MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Our pay is based on the role and the necessary skills and education to perform it successfully. The salary or hourly rate offered is determined by the role's specific requirements, including any applicable step rate pay system at the work location. Salary or hourly pay ranges are influenced by labor laws and Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) requirements applicable to the work location, which may also affect the workplace arrangement of the role.

Salary Range $91,500.00 - 146,300.00 USD Annual
