Job summary

MEI Rigging & Crating is seeking a Site Safety Manager in Columbus, OH to independently support Region EH&S and field operations. You will lead safety inspections, incident investigations, and ensure compliance with OSHA and industry standards to promote a safe work environment.

This role requires 5+ years in environmental health and safety, OSHA 30, and relevant certifications; the ideal candidate will coach teams, manage SIPPS, and advance continuous improvement across multi-site operations.

Qualifications

  • Recognize safety hazards and ensure corrective action.
  • Hold current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications.
  • Maintain OSHA 30-hour Construction Card (renewed every 2 years).
  • Possess degree in safety or 3+ years safety management in construction/manufacturing.
  • Maintain multiple safety certifications (ASP/CHST/CSP).

Responsibilities

  • Support field operations through site inspections and safety compliance.
  • Lead incident investigations and root-cause analyses.
  • Communicate MEI EHS policies and regulatory changes.
  • Coordinate OSHA training on site-specific topics (protocols, forklift, etc).
  • Provide program and administrative support for Region EH&S Manager.
  • Manage SIPPS, hot work permits, confined spaces, SDS, and related regulations.
  • Develop safe work instructions and JHAs as needed.
  • Conduct daily pre-task plan audits using the hierarchy of controls.
  • Perform routine inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain site safety records and training documentation.
  • Address safety violations promptly and document actions.
  • Provide safety training for employees and sub-contractors.
  • Participate in process improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with external vendors and regulatory bodies.

Job description

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The Site Safety Manager works independently under the direction of the Region EH&S Manager to perform multiple tasks, supporting many disciplines within the field Rigging & Crating group.
  • Primary responsibility is to support field operations through site inspection, safety compliance, site investigation for incidents involving employees, material and equipment damage. Must support an incident and injury-free field operation of MEI sites and promote continuous growth safety culture.
  • Effectively communicate all MEI EHS policies, guidelines, procedures, including regulatory changes and new business growth.
  • Support MEI sites with all customers, and OSHA required training (Site Specific, Protocol, OSHA, Forklift, Etc.).
  • Provide program, technical, and administrative support of management systems directed by the Region EH&S Manager.
  • Work collectively with the Region EH&S Manager, safety, and operations teams manage all incidents and accident cases through investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Manage site incident prevention program (SIPPS), Hot work permits, Confined Space, HAZCOM, Material Safety Data Sheets (SDS’s), and other applicable safety regulations. Coordinate with our customers in support of on-site safety initiatives, unique site conditions and mitigation of risk.
  • As needed develop, prepare, and instruct on safe work instructions, procedures, and job hazard analyses (JHA’s).
  • Conduct daily audits and approval of Pre-task plans using the hierarchy of controls to mitigate risk, reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses.
  • Conduct routine inspections and observations to evaluate environment, equipment, and processes in working areas to ensure compliance with government safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Prepares and maintains all administrative record keeping and other administrative tasks as needed, such as site safety inspection reports, site audits, observation reports, customer specific site safety documentation and training records.
  • Address and document all Safety violations by MEI personnel immediately.
  • Provide ongoing safety and health related training and required certifications for existing employees, new hires, and sub-contractors as required.
  • Participate in learning teams to develop more efficient processes/methods in support of continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify and assess conditions which could produce accidents and financial losses and evaluating the potential extent of resulting injuries.
  • Work with the Region EH&S Manager on accident-prevention and loss-control systems and programs for incorporation into operational policies of the organization.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with outside firms and organizations such as vendors, OSHA, fire/police departments, etc.
  • This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
Minimum Qualifications (Experience, Skills, and Education):
  • Be qualified to recognize safety hazards; and
  • Hold current certifications in First Aid, CPR, and AED; and
  • Possess a current OSHA 30-hour Construction Card, updated every two years through an approved EHS training vendor; and
  • Have either an academic degree in safety or a minimum of three (3) years of full-time construction safety management experience; and Hold at least one of the following safety certifications: ASP, CHST, or CSP.
  • Minimum 5 years proven Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) experience or Safety experience in construction or manufacturing industries at a multi-site organization.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with OSHA standards.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in MS Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications (Experience, Skills, and Education):
  • Construction Health & Safety Technician (CHST) preferred.
  • Possess OSHA 500 (Authorized Construction Outreach Trainer) (the training must be updated based on the frequency of version change [ e.g., NFPA 70E training must be updated as version changes are released every three years]).
  • Datacenter experience is preferred.
  • Three years of electrical safety experience on HV/MV systems.
  • Five years of electrical experience.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E or other local equivalent training (the training must be updated as version changes are released every three years).

*MEI requires a 7-year Criminal Background check and Drug-testing. Placements at customer locations may require additional badging requirements.
