Job summary

UCSF Health in Oakland and San Francisco seeks an Environmental Health & Safety lead to manage Environment of Care, fire and life safety, and hazardous materials programs, coordinating testing and waste management across campuses.

You will work with Infection Prevention, Facilities, and local authorities to ensure EOC elements are implemented and maintained, review audits, and drive readiness for Joint Commission, CMS, NFPA, Cal/OSHA, EPA surveys.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or 4 years of relevant EH&S experience.
• Valid California driver's license.
• Thorough knowledge of key EOC program areas including fire and life safety, hazardous materials and waste management, construction safety, and infection prevention support.
• In-depth understanding of applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including TJC, CMS, NFPA, OSHA, EPA, CDPH, and State Fire Marshal.
• General knowledge of EH&S domains including occupational safety, emergency management, industrial hygiene, utilities safety, and environmental services oversight.
• Thorough skill in interpreting and applying regulatory codes, technical standards, and hospital policies to ensure program compliance and risk mitigation.
• Verbal and written communication to a wide range of stakeholders.
• Interpersonal skills and political acumen to interact with regulatory agencies, internal departments, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Analytical, critical thinking, and organizational skills to assess problems and manage timelines.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and respond to emergencies and after-hours needs.
• CHSP certification required within one year of employment.
• Onsite work in Oakland and San Francisco.

Responsibilities

• Lead assigned EH&S program areas and coordinate testing of fire alarm and suppression systems.
• Oversee hazardous materials inventory and waste management.
• Coordinate with Infection Prevention, Facilities, and Environmental Services for EOC elements.
• Review inspection reports, coordinate internal compliance audits, and support regulatory surveys.
• Provide regulatory interpretation and recommendations based on best practices and applicable laws.
