The Role

The EHS Specialist – Overnight Operations provides Environmental, Health & Safety support across FreshDirect's production, warehouse, and distribution operations during overnight hours. Serving as the primary on-site EHS resource for the overnight shift, this role promotes a strong safety culture through hazard identification, incident response, regulatory compliance, employee engagement, and partnership with operational leaders. The ideal candidate is a proactive safety professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is committed to protecting employees and supporting operational excellence.

What You’ll Do

Plant & Operational Safety

• Serve as the primary on-site EHS resource during assigned overnight hours.
• Conduct routine safety inspections, observations, audits, and risk assessments to identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and emerging risks.
• Partner with supervisors and frontline employees to address safety concerns and reinforce safe work practices.
• Support compliance with OSHA regulations, company EHS policies, and established safety procedures.
• Conduct PIT/forklift and pedestrian safety observations and respond to PIT impact alerts, near misses, and related incidents.
• Support Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and task observations to identify hazards and recommend effective controls.
• Monitor safety at loading docks, yards, trailer staging areas, and other locations where warehouse and transportation activities intersect.
• Provide overnight support for transportation-related safety activities and elevate significant driver, vehicle, or fleet concerns to appropriate EHS and Transportation leaders.
• Promote employee engagement through hazard reporting, near-miss reporting, and safety awareness initiatives.
• Support the delivery of safety training, toolbox talks, safety communications, and other EHS education programs.
• Assist with regulatory inspections, audits, and EHS program implementation as required.

Incident Investigation & Corrective Action

• Respond to workplace injuries, near misses, vehicle incidents, and other safety events occurring during overnight operations.
• Conduct preliminary incident investigations, including gathering facts, obtaining witness statements, preserving evidence, and documenting conditions.
• Identify immediate, root, and contributing causes and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
• Support post-incident processes, including post-accident testing coordination when required.
• Track assigned corrective actions and communicate recurring or unresolved issues to EHS leadership.
• Ensure significant overnight incidents and safety concerns are properly documented, escalated, and communicated to the broader EHS team.
• Support implementation of the site's Emergency Action Plan and emergency response procedures during overnight operations.

Safety Compliance & Employee Engagement

• Assist in monitoring compliance with company safety programs and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain accurate safety records, reports, and documentation.
• Support safety committees, employee engagement efforts, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Collaborate with Operations leadership to identify opportunities for risk reduction and improved safety performance.
• Reinforce a culture of accountability, safety awareness, and continuous improvement throughout overnight operations.

What You’ll Bring

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
• 2+ years of EHS or occupational safety experience, preferably within manufacturing, food production, warehousing, distribution, logistics, or another operational environment.
• Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and general workplace safety practices.
• Experience conducting safety inspections, observations, audits, and incident investigations.
• Ability to work independently and make sound safety decisions with limited on-site EHS supervision.
• Strong communication, documentation, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to build effective working relationships with frontline employees, supervisors, operational leaders, and emergency responders.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and safety/compliance management systems.
• Ability and willingness to work a dedicated overnight schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of PIT/forklift safety and material handling equipment operations.
• OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification.
• Experience in food manufacturing, distribution, warehouse, or logistics environments.
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred based on workforce needs.
• Experience supporting emergency response, incident management, and safety training programs.

Salary

$68,000 - $72,000 annually

Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, skills, and business needs.

Schedule

This is a dedicated overnight position designed to provide consistent EHS coverage during overnight operations. Regular overnight work is a core requirement of the role. Weekend coverage may be required as part of the regular schedule or rotation, along with occasional schedule adjustments to support operational needs, training, investigations, meetings, and team coverage requirements.
