Department: Sleep Medicine

Hours: Full Time, 36 Hours/Week

Shift: Third, 7p-7a

EEG Technician I, Full-Time, Third Shift, Sleep Medicine Sleep Lab

UC Health is hiring a full-time EEG Tech I for the third shift with the Sleep Medicine/Sleep Lab department at UC Holmes Hospital.

The EEG Technologist I is an individual educated in electroneurodiagnostic (END) procedures (EEG, cvEEG, EMU, Evoked Potentials etc.) and monitoring. This person responds to patients having seizures in the EMU. S/he initiates seizure safety measures and alerts other members of the team (MD, RN and PCA) as needed. This person provides education regarding END procedures and epilepsy to the respective care team as well as patients and their family. Technologist can perform all necessary procedures independently.

  • Engages in population appropriate communication.
  • Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
  • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
  • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
  • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  • Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
  • Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely.
  • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
  • Prepare patients according to the ACNS (American Clinical Neurophysiology Society) Guidelines, for EEG (electroencephalographic), cvEEG (Continuous Video Electroencephalography) and EMU (epilepsy monitoring) procedures.
  • Perform routine and stat EEG/EMU procedures. Recognize/respond to life threatening situations. Identify electrographic changes and interact with patients directly and promptly during seizures, clinical events and sub-clinical events.
  • Observe and assist with other neurodiagnostic testing as needed (evoked potentials, EMG, etc.)
  • Ensuring recording reliability and patient safety throughout.
  • Perform advanced procedures including WADA and Depths independently
  • Provide age specific care according to the age of the patient. Provide pain management feedback to healthcare team.
  • Monitor live and recorded EEG and video data.
  • Recognize/respond to life threatening situations.
  • Identify electrographic changes and interact with patients directly and promptly during seizures, clinical events and sub-clinical events.
  • Ensuring recording reliability and patient safety throughout.
  • Identify and contact physician for frequent seizure activity so that medical intervention can be initiated.
  • Collaborate with physicians related to seizure activity
  • Accurately perform and check charges in EPIC and all tracking documents
  • Track all tests done
  • Gather and document related patient histories, maintaining patient confidentiality
  • Function within a networked computerized environment for data collection, review, and report retrieval.
  • Troubleshoot technical problems with multiple systems (routine EEG, EMU and cvEEG systems).
  • EMU Server Maintenance archive and maintain database per the department policies and procedures.
  • Clean, prepare and maintain EEG/EMU labs, equipment, and work environment. This includes the troubleshooting of equipment and technical problems.
  • Taking appropriate precautions to ensure electrical safety and sterilization of contaminated materials (invasive and noninvasive).
  • Empty the linen carts
  • Engages in population appropriate communication.

  • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
  • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient.
  • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Minimum Required: High School Diploma or GED
  • Certification:
    • Maintain American Heart Association Basic Life Support
  • Experience:
    • Minimum Required: Graduate from training program and obtain Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) credential from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists within 18 months of date of hire
    • Preferred: 1-2 years equivalent experience
