Job description

  • Administer classroom and individual instruction to participating youth in the assigned subject area
  • Develop curricula for assigned teaching subjects within Core Curriculum policy
  • Develop examination tools to measure students' strengths, weaknesses, and progress
  • Prepare and maintain detailed records and reports on attendance, achievement, individual progress, and needs
  • Direct students in recreational, social, and extracurricular activities
  • Participate in teachers' meetings, counselor-teacher meetings, team meetings, and staff development
  • Provide standards-based, differentiated, trauma-informed Language Arts instruction
  • Collaborate with administrators, special education staff, behavioral health professionals, security personnel, and the multidisciplinary team
  • Maintain safety, security, and accountability in a secure juvenile justice educational setting
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the position
Requirements
  • Current and valid Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Professional Educator License (PEL) with Secondary Education, Grades 9-12, in Language Arts/English
  • Ability to pass an IDOC/IDJJ background check
  • Ability to pass a drug screen
  • Ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate
  • Ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings relevant to the job duties
  • Preferred: at least two years of experience teaching students at least two grade levels behind in English/Language Arts
  • Preferred: at least two years of experience developing English/Language Arts curriculum aligned with Illinois State Standards or Common Core
  • Preferred: at least one year developing and delivering English/Language Arts lesson plans
  • Preferred: one year developing and evaluating English/Language Arts assessments
  • Preferred: at least two years using Microsoft Office, Google Applications, or equivalent software
  • Preferred: at least two years using online learning to teach English/Language Arts to middle and high school students
  • Preferred: at least two years attending professional development in English/Language Arts
  • Preferred: at least two years developing and implementing classroom management techniques
  • Preferred: at least one semester of collaborative or co-teaching with a Learning Behavior Specialist I teacher
  • Preferred: ability to demonstrate patience and tolerance with a wide range of behavior
