Zuni Public School District invites applications for the Educator Fellows program. This two-year fellowship supports aspiring educators with hands-on teaching experience under a mentor teacher in New Mexico.

Fellows will receive onsite training, access to NMPED sponsored courses, and a $32,500 annual salary with benefits. A temporary one-year contract is offered with potential renewal based on performance and funding.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required.
  • NMPED Educational Assistant or Substitute Teacher License or eligible; license within first month.
  • College coursework in education or related field is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional support under direct supervision of a highly qualified teacher.
  • Assist mentor teacher with program content and communication.
  • Consult with mentor on content and student progress.
  • Plan individualized instruction in reading and math, in small group or 1:1 settings.
  • Deliver targeted instruction in reading and math, small group or 1:1.
  • Track student progress and plan interventions with mentor teacher.
  • Maintain accurate records as required.
  • Participate in site/district professional development.
  • Complete micro courses and PD on topics including classroom management and tutoring strategies.
  • Develop strong relationships with students and colleagues.

Zuni Public School District Educator Fellow Job Description

Position Summary

Zuni Public School District (ZPSD) has received a grant award from New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) to hire Educator Fellows to work with our students. The goals of the Educator Fellows Program are to:

  • Create a new teacher/educator pipeline for schools in New Mexico.
  • Improve adult to student ratios in classrooms as the state recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Educator Fellows Program will provide critical hands-on experiences in the education field. This two-year fellowship is ideal for individuals who enjoy interacting with youth from diverse populations in a school setting, have good communication skills, are flexible, want to make a positive difference in the lives of young people and have a desire to become a certified teacher in New Mexico.

Essential Functions

The Educator Fellow will assist a mentor teacher to:

  • Provide instructional support services under the direct supervision of a highly qualified teacher.
  • Assist Mentor Teacher with program content and maintain open communication with both the Mentor Teacher and Educator Fellows Program Director.
  • Consult and assist with Mentor Teacher on a continuous basis regarding program content and progress of students.
  • Plan individualized targeted instruction to students in the areas of reading and math either in a small group or 1 to 1 setting with the collaboration of Mentor Teacher.
  • Deliver individualized targeted instruction to students in subject areas such as reading and math either in a small group or 1 to 1 setting.
  • Consult with Mentor Teacher in tracking student progress monitoring and planning of interventions.
  • Maintain current and accurate records as required.
  • Participate in all required/appropriate site/district professional development.
  • Complete micro courses and professional development series on various topics to include but not limited to classroom management, math intervention, reading intervention, high intensity tutoring strategies, and cultural and linguistically responsive teaching and learning.
  • Develop strong relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Participate in regular coaching and feedback sessions.


Desired Qualifications

  • High school diploma (required)
  • NMPED Educational Assistant and Substitute Teacher License or be eligible to receive one of these licenses. License must be in place within the first month of employment.
  • College degree or college courses in a field related to education
  • Willingness to experience and gain knowledge of Zuni language and culture
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Internet)
  • Reading and writing skills
  • Interpersonal communication skills, including teamwork
  • Ability to be self-directed and self-motivated
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Task-oriented, ability to prioritize tasks
  • Ability to practice empathy and treat people with respect and professionalism at all times.

Working and Physical Conditions/Additional Requirement:
Adhere to all educational guidelines as defined by the New Mexico Public Education Department and ZPSD policies. Comply with local, tribal, state, and federal rules and regulations.


Training Provided through Fellowship

  • Onsite training with the mentor teacher and ZPSD
  • NMPED sponsored courses (face to face and online)

Contract Term, Salary and Benefits

Successful Educator Fellow candidates will receive a 1-year temporary employment contract with the Zuni Public School District for the 2026-2027 school year. The contract term may be subject to change based on NMPED funding and/or satisfactory job performance. A temporary employment contract will be given for one school year at a time and then be renewed for a second school year pending satisfactory job performance and meeting NMPED Educator Fellows program requirements.

Please note there is no guarantee that the Educator Fellow will be hired as a full time ZPSD employee at the end of the fellowship period.

Salary: $32,500
