Description of Work

"If there are no qualified candidates remaining in the applicant pool who meet the minimum education and experience or knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position then, an applicant who does not meet the minimum requirements may be considered for hire as a trainee. Salary for a trainee may be set lower than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting. The salary is adjusted as the trainee obtains the additional education and experience to fully meet the position qualifications as outlined in the classification specification."

The North Carolina Forest Service provides forest protection, emergency response, resource management, and environmental education across 100 counties in North Carolina.

Job Responsibilities
  • Present forestry/environmental education programs to schools, civic groups, the public, and conduct workshops.
  • Assist in designing and developing educational programs.
  • Coordinate volunteers, community service workers, and prison inmates.
  • Design, layout, and maintain forest trails, picnic areas, buildings, and exhibits.
  • Enforce rules and regulations applicable to the forest.
  • Assist in wildfire suppression and participate in Incident Management Teams.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the forest’s management plan, including prescribed burning, timber harvesting, reforestation, timber stand improvement, water quality, and wildlife management.

Work hours are typically 8-5 M-F, with extended hours during fire danger periods and emergencies. Overnight travel may be required.

Duty Station: 2256 Old US 70 West, Clayton, NC

This position requires successful completion of Ranger Training. Official uniform and a State vehicle are provided.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • Knowledge of forest management, wildfire suppression, or GPS/GIS software.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Self-motivated, team player, and able to remain calm under stress.

Management preference for experience in environmental education.

Minimum Education and Experience: An associate’s degree in forest management or related field, or high school diploma/GED with two years of related experience, or equivalent training and experience.

Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license within 90 days of hire.
