Job summary

Capital Area Intermediate Unit is seeking a paraprofessional to support students eligible for special education. The role collaborates with teachers to foster a positive educational environment and to implement instructional activities under supervision.

Schedule is Monday through Friday, 7.5 hours per day, 190 days per year. Salary follows CAIU's collective bargaining agreement: $28,880 with HS diploma or daily rate $152; or $31,160 with higher qualifications.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma required or higher per CAIU salary schedule.
• Possible qualifications include 48 college credits, Associates Degree, or 5 years classroom support.

Responsibilities

• Works with the teacher as a team member in the educational and social development of students.
• Assists the teacher in developing and maintaining a positive environment.
• Acts as a positive social and emotional model for students.
• Performs instructional activities and monitors results under the teacher's direction.
• Assists in managing student behavior per policies.
• Performs CPR, First Aid, and child restraint techniques as needed.
• Provides input on student progress, behavior, and needs to the teacher.
• Follows CAIU policies and confidentiality (FERPA).
• Assists in meeting students' personal care needs.
• Assists students to and from vehicles and building activities, including lifting.
• Performs clerical/housekeeping duties as required.
• Supports a positive paraprofessional-teacher relationship while not replacing the teacher's authority.

Salary: This paraprofessional position follows the Collective Bargaining Agreement Salary Schedule - HS Diploma: $28,880 (daily rate $152.00) or High School plus 48 college credits OR Associates Degree OR 5 years of classroom support: $31,160 (daily rate $164.00) for the 26/27 SY

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7.5 hours/day, 190 days/year

Job Goal: To support the professional staff in meeting the needs of students eligible for special education.

Performance Responsibilities

• Works with the teacher as a team member in the educational and social development of students.
• Assists the teacher in developing and maintaining a positive environment.
• Acts as a positive social and emotional model for students.
• Performs instructional activities and monitors the results of those activities under the teacher's direction.
• Assists the teacher upon request in the management of student behavior in accordance with established disciplinary policies and procedures.
• Performs CPR, First Aid, and/or proper child restraint techniques as needed.
• Provides input to the teacher regarding relevant information on student academic progress, behavioral change, physical needs and other areas as appropriate.
• Follows all established CAIU policies and administrative procedures.
• Maintains confidentiality by refraining from discussion of student progress and problems as required in the CAIU Policy on Confidentiality of Information (FERPA).
• Assists in meeting the student's personal care needs as directed.
• Assist students to and from vehicles and other parts of the building, and/or off-site experiences, all of which may include lifting.
• Performs clerical and housekeeping duties as required.
• Assumes responsibility for fostering a good educational paraprofessional to teacher working relationship, but in no case supersedes the teacher's authority to manage all aspects of the instructional program.
• Works to create, maintain and build positive working relationships with internal and external (district, community, agency) staff.
• Provides coverage, under the supervision of a certified professional teacher, and monitors recess, lunch, etc., as needed
• Participates in preparation of materials, bulletin boards, and other displays.
• Follows assigned schedule including attendance, start and end times, and overall punctuality.
• Adheres to all federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations, particularly as they relate to the Pennsylvania School Code.
• Attends in-services, training, and meetings as directed.
• Serves on any CAIU team as directed.
• Assumes any other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director or his/her designee.
