Job summary

The University of Vermont Medical Center is seeking an Educational Interpreter to provide onsite interpreting services for deaf students in classroom settings and school activities.

This role involves collaboration with the student's school team while adhering to professional ethics and regulations. Candidates are expected to have a Bachelor's degree (preferred) and at least two years of related experience. Comprehensive benefits are included.

Qualifications

Job description

Please note: This position providesonsite interpreting services for a student who is deaf in the classroom, school or school-sponsored activities (sports, theater, clubs). We have positions in districts throughout the state of Vermont.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Educational Interpreter is part of the student's school team. They have the freedom to act within Departmental and UVM Medical Center policy to maximize services to students and school districts. They must follow a professional code of ethics, regulations, and laws as they pertain to interpreters and student rights. They receive guidance from the Supervisor of the ASL/Bilingual Unit and peer support from the other Educational Interpreters, Communication Facilitators, Sign Support Providers, and DHHDB Edu Svcs Staff.

KNOWLEDGE / SPECIAL SKILLS
  • Fluency in English and American Sign Language
  • Understands and agrees to follow confidentiality rules and a Code of Ethics, such as the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, high level of professionalism, and ability to exercise sound discretion in the moment to serve the needs of students and schools as they arise.
  • Knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to bridge ethnic values, cultural beliefs and behaviors within educational systems. Ability to work with diverse populations from various cultural/economic backgrounds and age groups.
EDUCATION

Bachelor's Degree preferred or High School Diploma or Equivalent, with minimum 2 years relevant college or professional training or equivalent experience required or Native ASL user.

Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 4.0 or higher preferred or credentialed by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).

Successful completion of a formal program in American Sign Language / English interpreting, preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum two years of formal educational/medical interpreting, with demonstrated knowledge of educational specialties.
