Job summary

Compass Connections is hiring at the SAC Shelter in San Antonio, TX to support classroom activities, ESL instruction, and student progress in an educational setting. Must have a GED or high school diploma, 3 years of relevant experience, and bilingual English/Spanish abilities.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Arrive on time and be in class 15 minutes before students start.
  • Assist the teacher in maintaining classroom order and discipline.
  • Communicate concerns about students to the teacher and direct care staff.
  • Interact with children appropriately for development.
  • Help assess and evaluate student progress daily and quarterly.
  • Assist with lesson preparation, instruction, and cleanup.
  • Serve as substitute teacher as needed.
  • Perform extensive data entry of student information including assessments and grades.
  • Maintain presentation of classroom to be safe and aesthetically pleasing.
  • Assist ESL Facilitators in instruction of basic subjects.

Compensation and Schedule
  • Hourly Rate: $23.25 per hour
  • Language Requirement: Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
  • Work Schedule: M-F, 7:30am - 4:00pm
  • Academic Req: Required – GED or High school diploma as required by state regulations; Preferred – Some college course work in teaching Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, Writing, and English as a Second Language at all levels of education, and/or social work
  • Certifications: First aid, CPR, Emergency behavior intervention
  • Work experience: Required – Three (3) years of experience in a classroom, community service and/or an education setting
Critical Action Items & Measurable Deliverables
  • Arrive on time and be inside the classroom no later than 15 minutes before students arrive.
  • Assist the teacher in maintaining order and discipline in the classroom.

  • Assist the teacher with preparation, instruction, and clean-up of materials and activities daily.
  • Serve as substitute teacher as needed.
  • Perform extensive data entry of student information to include assessment results and grades.
  • Preparation and execution of effective lesson plans.
  • Administer a variety of assessments to assist in identifying progress.
  • Documenting and recording scores and other relevant data.
  • Maintaining classroom presentation to promote both an aesthetically pleasing and safe environment.
  • Assist ESL Facilitators in the instruction of basic subjects.
  • Assist the ESL Facilitators in in maintaining order and discipline in the classroom.
  • Communicate all relevant concerns about students to the Lead ESL Facilitator.
  • Accuracy in record keeping and data entry.
Other Responsibilities
  • Be supportive of Compass Connections Educational Services Department on campus and in the community as well as being loyal and complementary of administration, staff, and fellow colleagues.
  • Interact with children in ways appropriate to promote healthy child growth and development.
  • Help assess and evaluate each student’s progress daily, weekly, and monthly.
  • Assist the ESL Facilitator with preparation, instruction, and clean-up in the classroom.
  • Serve as a substitute teacher as needed.
  • Attend all planned Educational Services functions: e.g., open houses, in services, and teacher workdays required for other teaching staff.
  • Answer and make telephone calls, file, send faxes, make copies and other clerical duties as needed.
  • Serve as tutor to students between the ages 5 to 17 years of age working on a broad array of tasks at various grade levels. Answer questions about classroom assignments and provide individual instruction and guidance.
  • Carry out supervisory teacher duties in a prompt and reasonable manner, when necessary, as agreed on with the teacher.
  • Handle all student information with utmost confidentiality.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
  • Foster Care Programs - Support, encourage, and recruit foster parents.
Requirements
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug screens throughout employment.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.
  • Working knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic.
  • Provide proof of work eligibility status upon request.
  • Pass a pre-employment and biennial criminal background checks.
  • Demonstrate the ability to: a. Respond sensitively and competently to the service population’s cultural and socio-economic characteristics. b. Work collaboratively with other staff members, service providers and professionals. c. Provide crisis intervention according to training provided by Compass Connections when needed to maintain a safe environment. d. Work in a fast-paced environment and maintain emotional control and professional composure at all times. e. Maintain computer literacy required to meet the responsibilities of the position. f. Work effectively and without intensive supervision both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of all Compass Connections policies and procedures.
