Job summary

The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community Education Department seeks an Education Student Advocate for the Middle School to support students and reinforce learning under supervision of the Pre-K-12 Supervisor.

You will assist teachers, supervise after school study halls, communicate student progress, and help implement behavioral strategies while advocating for students and participating in professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Associate of Arts Degree or equivalent.
  • Complete the Fundamental Course of Study within 6 months of hire.
  • Finish the FCS 28 clock hours across 12 training units.
  • Current First Aid/ CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist classroom teacher to reinforce material and skills.
  • Support after school study hall programs daily.
  • Help supervise students during drills, assemblies and field trips.
  • Monitor progress and report weekly to ESA supervisor.
  • Implement behavioral management strategies with guidance.
  • Attend parent conferences when appropriate.
  • Maintain cooperative relations with school and tribal personnel.

JOB TITLE: Education Student Advocate Middle School
DEPARTMENT: Education
POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Pre-K-12 Supervisor, the Education Student Advocate provides a well-organized, smoothly functioning class and after school environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resources.

JOB DUTIES:
  • Work with individual Tribal students (primary goal) or small groups of students (Tribal/non-Tribal, secondary goal) under supervision of classroom teacher to reinforce and master learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Help students master equipment or instructional material assigned by the teacher.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
  • Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, and field trips.
  • Provide education support at After School Study Hall every day.
  • Participates in in-service training programs as assigned.
  • Attend parent conferences and meetings when appropriate and welcomed by the family.
  • Monitors student progress in instruction programs and works cooperatively with supervising teacher. Provides a weekly report on student progress to ESA supervisor.
  • Implement behavioral management strategies in coordination with supervising teacher.
  • Attend professional development opportunities.
  • Be a strong advocate for students.
  • Fulfill all responsibilities of a Mandated Reporter.
  • Because of the Tribes commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate of Arts Degree (AAS)
  • Minimum 2 years experience working in an educational Environment;
  • Pass one of the Paraeducator Assessments approved by the Washington Professional Educator Standards Board within 90 days of hire;
  • Completion of the Fundamental Course of Study (FCS) within 6 months of hire.
  • The FCS is one 28 clock hours course consisting of 12 units of training approved by the Swinomish Education Department and in collaboration with your employing school district.
  • Current First Aid/ CPR certification.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Effective behavior management techniques;
  • Rules and procedures for student safety;
  • Necessary equipment, computers, machinery, tools, or software;
  • Basic subjects including arithmetic, grammar, spelling and reading;
  • Subject areas appropriate to assignment;
  • Effective communication with students, parents or guardians, staff and administrators;
  • Designing and implementing lesson plans for students having a wide range of achievement;
  • Addressing students in an understanding, patient, receptive, positive and confident manner;
  • Organizing activities in keeping with the maturity and attention span of assigned students;
  • Redirecting student behavior;
  • A proven ability to work well with students;
  • A proven ability to develop and maintain a cooperative relationship with all school and tribal personnel and particularly with students;
  • Proven record of punctuality and dependability.
