CURRENT VACANCY INFORMATION

The Department of Corrections is accepting applications for an Education Specialist II at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine. This position is open to current Maine DOC employees who wish to transfer to this facility and all outside candidates.

Job Description

This is professional services work promoting public safety by ensuring that residents of Long Creek Youth Development Center are provided with education, treatment, and other services that teach skills and competencies. The position is responsible to organize, promote, and administer a program of successful re-integration for committed students at the Long Creek Youth Development Center by communicating effectively with residents' home schools to develop relationships that support the reintegration process beginning when students are committed to the facility. The Project Impact Coordinator is also responsible for communicating with detained residents' home schools to minimize educational disruption as a result of confinement. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in a juvenile correctional facility.

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS for this position include, but are not limited to:

Education

Collaborate with Division of Juvenile Services (Facility and Regions), schools and schools’ administrative units (SAUs) to coordinate the education of students detained at Long Creek Youth Development Center and their reintegration into their home schools, including:

  • Directs the education component of the intake process for detained students to meet Maine Special Education regulations and Maine Learning Results.
  • Directs communication with schools and SAU’s regarding youth who are being held for court or serving short sentences.
  • Communicate with superintendents, school administrators, supervisors and teachers to exchange information regarding students.
  • Directs the collection and distribution of educational records and other information from SAU’s.
  • Coordinates reintegration team training.

Serves on educational committees within the facility and in the community.

Maintain monthly statistics regarding releases and returns, and submits quarterly reports regarding transition planning, education services, diplomas awarded, community reintegration releases, school participation and school districts served.

Aids the Project Impact Statewide Advisory Board to explain program, exchange information and develop program support.

Informs the teaching staff of the special education needs of students in the Long Creek Youth Development Center.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED to successfully perform the work assigned:

Knowledge of state and federal laws, rules, and regulations applicable to and enforced by the Department, including special education laws (federal IDEA 2004).

Ability to interpret and explain statutory provisions to local school authorities and the public

Knowledge of Maine’s learning standards, proficiency-based education and student assessment.

Knowledge of the services, curriculum and program needs of students with disabilities.

Knowledge and experience working with at risk and emotionally disabled youth.

Ability to successfully coordinate education, treatment and other services appropriate for detained youth.

Ability to coordinate, organize, promote and administer a program of successful re-integration for committed students.

Ability to communicate effectively with schools to develop relationships to initiate and support the reintegration process.

Knowledge and understanding of the requirements of working in a secure correctional environment.

Ability to communicate effectively

Ability to apply and facilitate group dynamics and use exemplary interpersonal skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and provide quality service.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field and two (2) years professional level experience in developing, coordinating and /or administering education programs, treatment programs for youth with special needs. A Master’s Degree in Education or required specialty/subject area may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licensing/Certification Requirements

Individual positions may require a professional teaching certificate in assigned specialty/subject area as issued by the State Department of Education & Cultural Services.
