Position Title: Education Specialist I

Position Code: 30122

Salary Range: $50,253.60 – $102,664.80

Position Location: Special Education Services, Montgomery or Birmingham, AL

Open Date: November 2025

The Special Education Services (SES) Section of the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) intends to fill multiple Education Specialist (ES) I positions.

Current SES Openings for ES I (subject to change):

  • Curriculum and Instructional Support Team (IST)
  • Fiscal Management Team (FMT)
  • Integrated Monitoring Team (IMT)
  • Special Projects (SP)
  • Technical Assistance Team (TAT)
Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:
  • Implement special education activities so information is gathered comprehensively, correctly, in a timely manner, and communicated appropriately.
  • Provide technical assistance to local education agencies (LEAs) on special education topics.
  • Prepare, review, and manage documents, correspondence, and emails.
  • Address inquiries from LEA staff, state agency personnel, officials, and the public via phone, email, letters, and in-person meetings.
  • Research, compile, and produce documents and manuals aligned with current regulations and practices in special education.
  • Collaborate with section, department, and other agency staff on projects and initiatives.
  • Use office software to support correspondence, communication, and meeting deadlines.
  • Encourage positive community principles within the office.
  • Carry out additional related duties as required.

These positions are located in Montgomery, AL, or Birmingham, AL, and may involve frequent travel throughout the state.

  • Must meet the minimum requirements as noted on the State Personnel Department Job Announcement for Education Specialist I.
  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college in special education or a closely related field (e.g., psychometry, school psychology, educational leadership).
  • At least five years of professional experience in teaching, educational administration, or comparable roles.
  • At least three years of experience in special education or a directly related area.

  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Effective at developing and presenting ideas in multiple formats.
  • Knowledgeable about special education needs, services, and requirements under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office or equivalent software.

Preferred (but not required) skills for Fiscal Management Team candidates:

  • Familiar with Education General Administrative Regulations (EDGAR) and Uniform Grant Guidance (UGG).
  • Basic Excel (e.g., ability to enter/edit data, format cells, create/modify charts).
  • Intermediate Excel (e.g., ability to use advanced functions, pivot tables, and macros for efficiency).
