Job summary

Disability Rights North Carolina seeks a Supervising Attorney for the Education Team to lead DRNC's legal advocacy protecting students' rights in K–12 education across North Carolina. The role blends litigation, policy advocacy, and coalition work to advance systemic change.

The candidate will supervise attorneys and advocates, develop education-related strategies, address issues like exclusionary discipline and the school-to-prison pipeline, and represent clients in OAH proceedings and court

Qualifications

JD degree and admission to practice law in North Carolina or willingness to obtain licensure promptly
At least five years of legal experience
Significant experience in education, disability, civil rights, juvenile justice, or related areas
Experience litigating special education matters before OAH and/or civil rights cases in state or federal court
Ability to translate organizational goals into effective litigation, policy, administrative, or advocacy initiatives
Strong legal research, writing, negotiation, and oral advocacy skills
Experience supervising or mentoring attorneys or other professional staff
Commitment to DRNC’s mission to advance rights of people with disabilities
Life experience with disability
Experience under IDEA, Section 504, ADA or related civil rights laws
Experience leading systemic or impact litigation and advocacy efforts
Experience addressing school-to-prison pipeline or exclusionary discipline
Understanding of trauma and trauma-informed approaches
Ability to communicate in ASL or Spanish

Responsibilities

Lead development and evaluation of DRNC’s strategy for education-related legal initiatives
Identify emerging legal issues and opportunities for litigation and advocacy
Supervise systemic legal advocacy addressing exclusionary discipline and school-to-prison pipeline
Develop strategies addressing discriminatory discipline and altered school days
Represent clients in special education, discipline, discrimination, and related matters
Evaluate potential litigation and participate in case development
Develop and litigate strategic cases from investigation to enforcement
Supervise team members and ensure high-quality representation
Mentor team through co-counseling and trainings
Collaborate across DRNC teams and with policy staff on advocacy
