Job summary

The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk seeks Education Specialists to support the Mission Engagement department by teaching and developing formal educational programs aligned with local learning standards. This role covers school and group programs, homeschool, Scout and camp initiatives.

You will collaborate with educators and volunteers, prepare materials, and help grow programs while ensuring safety with animal ambassadors.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in Education or Natural Science.
  • Experience developing curriculum for school or camp programs is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead on- and off-site education programs for school, homeschool, scout, and camp.
  • Assist with prep, setup, execution, and cleanup of programs.
  • Develop curricula, train staff and volunteers, and evaluate programs.
  • Propose new programs under Education Programs Manager.
  • Coordinate program communications with partners.
  • Supervise staff/volunteers delivering education programs.
  • Create learning resources for teachers and students.
  • Ensure scheduling, tracking, and documentation.
  • Maintain animal handling certifications per protocol.
  • Adhere to safety and animal ambassador protocols.
