Job description

Job Title: Education Manager
Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Overview
The primary responsibility of the Education Manager is to develop and implement The Chinati Foundation’s diverse, multi-faceted education programs with a focus on deep engagement with the museum’s collection on the grounds of the museum and in classroom settings. The Education Manager is the museum’s educational liaison with schools and universities with a particular emphasis on working closely with the Marfa Independent School District (MISD) and schools in Chinati’s tri-county region. The Education Manager oversees current and future programs including the museum’s in-class room education with MISD, Summer Shake Up, family and adult programming, and visits to the museum for K-12 students. The Education Manager works closely with the Chief Operating Officer to develop a strategy for museum education, monitor growth, and annually assess reach and impact of the activities of the education department. Additionally, the Education Manager:

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops, coordinates, and implements Pre-K through 12th grade education programs, children, adult, and family programs, and workshops at the museum in alignment with the museum’s mission.
  • Supervises and works collaboratively with the Education Coordinator daily, including carrying out their annual review.
  • Serves as lead instructor for educational programming.
  • Works with classroom instructors to meet specific TEKS goals when appropriate.
  • Develops and implements structure for K-12 and family tours of the museum.
  • Fosters long-term relationships with regional organizations and area school districts through ongoing and consistent outreach.
  • Supervises and prepares letters of agreement as needed with part-time class instructors, assistants, and interns.
  • Manages departmental administration and facilities.
  • Works closely with the Chief Operating Officer to create and monitor the annual education budget.
  • Works with the Communications Manager to document and communicate the activities of the education department.
  • Liaises with development department to assist with education-department specific grant preparation and reporting.
  • Collaborates with Chinati’s Programs Manager as appropriate.
  • Organizes meetings and prepares reports and meeting minutes as staff liaison for the Education Committee of Chinati’s Board of Trustees.
  • Works closely with Visitor Services, Programs, and Communications Departments and supports the museum’s public programs priorities as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • B.A. degree in education, arts education, design, or art preferred.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in museum education and outreach or equivalent educational position.
  • Minimum five years of direct experience managing a department and supervising staff or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working with K-12th grade students.
  • Enthusiasm for implementing and building arts-based curriculum.
  • Excellent studio skills in a variety of media preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, and significant problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated and proactive.
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite.
  • Willingness to complete CPR/AED/First Aid certification (Chinati will provide training).
  • Valid driver’s license, insurance and willingness to use it on the job preferred.
  • Some weekend and evening hours required.

Terms
This is a regular full-time exempt salaried position. Regular work hours are 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday. Some weekend, holiday, and evening hours required.

Salary range is $58,000 – $62,000, depending on experience. Chinati provides a generous benefits package including health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans, paid time off and an employer sponsored 403(b) retirement plan.Chinati is a qualified employer for the public service loan forgiveness program.

In 1986, Donald Judd (1928–1994) established The Chinati Foundation/La Fundación Chinati with the aim of bringing art, architecture, and land together to form a coherent whole. Judd imagined Chinati, which is located on a 340-acre former military base in Marfa, Texas, as a site where artists could situate work according to their own intentions, permanently. Today, Chinati carefully maintains artists’ installations as they were conceived and presents them to a broad public. With rotating exhibitions, artist residencies, educational activities, and public programs, Chinati is a place where art—both the creation and viewing of it—is a part of daily life.
