Department: TRIO Programs

Position Summary

The Education Coordinator/Advisor for MSU Denver's TRIO Upward Bound program supports first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented high school students by fostering academic skills, motivation, and college readiness. Responsibilities include designing instructional programs, advising students, coordinating college prep efforts, and managing recruitment, retention, and data reporting. The role acts as a liaison with schools, community partners, and the university, overseeing program aspects and budgets in line with federal TRIO grant requirements.

This position reports to the Director and is funded through a federal grant. We aim to create an equitable environment that values diversity, inclusion, and equity, recognizing the importance of critical inquiry, dialogue, and action in achieving a just society. Our institution is a Hispanic Serving Institution with a diverse student body, over 55% first-generation students and 48% students of color, committed to fostering equity and success.

Duties/Responsibilities
  1. Student Advising & Academic Support (20%)
    • Provide academic and college advising to Upward Bound students.
    • Monitor progress, attendance, and engagement; intervene as needed.
    • Develop and track individualized education plans (IEPs) with students, families, and educators.
    • Support course selection ensuring college readiness and graduation requirements.
    • Offer career exploration and mentoring.
  2. College & Career Readiness (20%)
    • Guide students through college applications, essays, and deadlines.
    • Support financial aid processes, including FAFSA and scholarships.
    • Organize college visits, tours, and speaker events.
    • Deliver SAT/ACT prep and coordinate registration.
  3. Instructional Programming & Curriculum Development (20%)
    • Design and implement in-school academic enrichment programs.
    • Deliver seminars on study skills, time management, and test strategies.
    • Coordinate tutoring and interventions.
    • Develop summer curricula, including bridge programs for seniors.
    • Incorporate Social-Emotional Learning strategies into activities.
  4. Student Recruitment & Engagement (10%)
    • Recruit students via school partnerships.
    • Conduct intake, orientation, and needs assessments.
    • Develop engagement and retention strategies.
    • Maintain communication with students and families.
  5. School & Community Partnership Liaison (10%)
    • Build relationships with schools and community organizations.
    • Coordinate service-learning and enrichment opportunities.
    • Represent the program at events and fairs.
  6. Event & Staff Supervision (5%)
    • Plan and oversee enrichment activities and leadership events.
    • Recruit and supervise mentors and staff, especially in summer.
  7. Data Management, Evaluation, & Compliance (5%)
    • Maintain accurate student records.
    • Support program evaluation and reporting.
    • Ensure compliance with federal regulations.
  8. Program Development & Budget Oversight (5%)
    • Manage budgets for materials and programs.
    • Assist in planning new initiatives.
  9. Other Duties (5%)
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, or related field.
  • Experience with diverse urban youth.
  • Strong advising or mentoring background.
  • Knowledge of secondary education and college admissions.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing programs.
  • Familiarity with FERPA and confidentiality standards.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with TRIO or similar programs.
  • Knowledge of Colorado and Denver Public Schools standards.
  • Conversational Spanish ability.
  • Knowledge of TRIO regulations and compliance.
  • Experience in curriculum development and interventions.
Work Hours
  • Full-time, 40 hours/week, Exempt.
  • Schedule: Mon-Thurs 10:00am-6:30pm, Fri 8:00am-5:00pm.
  • Evenings/Weekends as needed; some flexibility.
  • Remote work possible one day/week.
  • Travel: Rare.
Salary

Estimated between $47,300 - $55,000, based on experience and qualifications. The minimum is $47,300.
