Job description

Bagaduce Music | Blue Hill and Surrounding Coastal and Central Maine
Hours: 20-30 hours per week
Reports to: Executive Director
Start date: Fall 2026, or as soon as filled
Application deadline: Applications reviewed as received; position open until filled

About Bagaduce Music

Bagaduce Music has been building a musical community on the coast of Maine since 1983. It started as a lending library that has grown to 240,000 titles which circulate around the world, and is now growing into a home for classes, ensembles, jams, and concerts. Our mission, at its simplest, involves helping people make, share, and enjoy music in Maine and around the world. We are growing the organization program by program, without a giant endowment, rooted in the musical communities of central and coastal Maine. We look for capable, cheerful, hardworking teammates who care about their neighbors, work well without a manager over their shoulder, and treat this with the care of a fine craft. If you like being trusted to figure things out and get after it, you will feel at home here.

In our programs we teach fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, ukulele, songcrafting, and other group instrumental courses. The Belfast Community Chorus, the Trad Song Ensemble, the Belfast Spelmanslag, the Northern New England Ensemble and several other ensembles are our initiatives and a key part of our educational model. We run jam sessions, a concert series, workshops connected to the concert series, and are trying a pilot project called Music in the Schools.

We are a small staff with a helpful volunteer corps, and we’re in the middle of a strategic planning process that runs to our 50th anniversary in 2033.

The Role

The job at its core involves running the year-round arc of semesters and summer camps, from scheduling and enrollment through teacher and student communication, records, and reporting. It can be a creative role. You will partner with the Executive Director, the board, and our teachers to notice gaps in what our community wants and needs, spot future teachers already in our orbit, and help shape what next semester and next summer look like. The job includes managing systems to keep track of educational spaces including the various rooms across our campus, the performance hall and Bagaduce House.

This is a hands-on job at a small organization. You will coordinate courses and schedules with teachers, run registration, process scholarship applications, and team up with the events admin to make educational programming happen alongside concerts. You will build a class calendar and be present during class sessions, including a warm presence during shared dinners, to answer questions and help things run smoothly. You will also carry some of the education-focused marketing work: posters, press releases about education programs, and social media that supports classes and camps. This is not the same as being our organization-wide marketing lead; that hat lives elsewhere on the team. But education programs need their own storyteller.

What You Will Do
Education
  • Build and maintain the annual calendar of classes, workshops, ensembles, jams, and summer camps
  • Coordinate scheduling, contracts, and logistics with teaching artists
  • Support instructors in their long-range planning
  • Coordinate Music in the Schools
  • Administer summer programming: run our own camps, host rentals like Songweavers, and help design new offerings
  • Notice gaps in the community and people who could become future teachers, and bring those ideas back to the team
  • Answer day-to-day questions from students, families, and teachers
Systems and records
  • Administer our Opus1 enrollment platform: registration, scholarships, feedback, and communication with students and teachers
  • Maintain accurate enrollment, attendance, and scholarship records
  • Own the education section of our website; build and maintain an FAQ so students can self-serve the common questions
  • Prepare program reports for the Executive Director, the board, and our funders
  • When needed, serve as the on-site point person for our Thursday evening programming in Belfast and in other locations as they arise, and support teaching staff in their efforts
  • Maintain the day-to-day relationship with hosts
  • Support off-campus ensembles and jams
Education marketing
  • Build posters, write short press releases, and send items to local media for classes, workshops, and camps
  • Support education-program social media, email, and website updates in coordination with our marketing coordinator
  • Own the storytelling for education programs; organization-wide marketing sits elsewhere on the team
Spaces
Campus spaces
  • Manage campus space bookings and rentals, and help build a self-serve system for reserving the Performance Hall and practice rooms.
  • Coordinate room use across campus so classes, concerts, meetings, and rentals do not collide.
  • Manage Bagaduce House hospitality for visiting teachers and performers: keep the Airbnb-style calendar current, coordinate cleaners between stays, and make sure the rooms are ready.
  • Flag facility and maintenance needs, and coordinate seasonal work including snow and ice removal on the driveway during class times.
Planning
  • Participate in the Education working group of our strategic planning process, which establishes six-year priorities.
  • The Education Coordinator partners closely with the Executive Director and Board, who set overall education strategy and direction. You’ll lead day-to-day program execution, bring ideas to the table, and help shape how the vision translates into practice.
  • This role does not book the concert series, manage fundraising, or lead organization-wide marketing. Other staff hold those.
What You Bring
Required
  • Experience coordinating programs, classes, or events: schedules, registrations, participants, follow-through.
  • Comfort with database and booking systems. You do not need to know our specific group of applications from day one (Opus1, Constant Contact, WordPress, Google Workspace), but you should be the kind of person who is ready to learn a system and keep it clean, updated, and constantly improved.
  • Clear, friendly communication with students, families, teachers, guests, and community partners.
  • Reliable presence at our Blue Hill campus and off-campus educational experiences.
  • Willingness to do physical, practical work. This job includes carrying things, setting up rooms, and being the person who notices the burnt-out bulb.
  • Capable, cheerful, and hardworking, with a team-player instinct. You will be the liaison between the Executive Director and much of our education community.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Helpful
  • Hospitality, property management, or short-term rental experience.
  • School administration or arts education background.
  • Grant reporting experience.
  • Musicianship of any kind. If you play, there is room to sit in.
  • Experience at a small nonprofit where everyone does several jobs.
  • We care more about organization, follow-through, and warmth with people than about a specific credential. If you are close on paper and confident in practice, apply.
How We Work

Bagaduce Music is a small, capable team. We hire smart people, trust them, and expect them to take the ball and run: bring us questions, bring us ideas, tell us what you need, and get after it. There is not a task list waiting in your inbox each morning, and there is not a manager over your shoulder. If that sounds refreshing, welcome. If it sounds daunting, this may not be the right fit for you.

What we value in a teammate:

  • Comfortable with autonomy, and comfortable asking for help when you need it.
  • A team player who cares about the people you work with and the community we serve.
  • Willingness to use the technology we already have (Google Workspace, Opus1, Constant Contact, WordPress) and to help us pick better tools when the existing ones stop serving us.
  • We hold regular staff meetings and stay in touch between them by email and occasional text. We are actively figuring out how the team communicates best, and you would be part of that conversation.
Schedule and Location

Based on our Blue Hill campus. This role will be largely on-site with plenty of flexibility to work remotely if needed. Public hours at the Blue Hill Campus are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10am to 4pm. Thursday evenings in Belfast are fixed. You will not need to be at all educational events, but you will need to coordinate coverage for those you will not be at. Our schedule includes some evening and weekend hours.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting pay is $25 per hour.

Bagaduce Music is working toward positions with more hours and stronger benefits as part of our current planning process, and this role reflects that direction. As our programming grows, there is a realistic path for this position to expand toward full time, at which point it would carry health insurance. We are also curious about wellness benefits down the road, such as massage or sauna access, but nothing along those lines is on the table yet.

Other benefits at any hours level: meaningful location flexibility for work that doesn’t require on-site presence, a small and supportive team, and a job where music and community are at its core.

Training and Transition

Our departing coordinator built the education systems you will inherit and has offered to train her successor, if the transition time works for everyone.

Bagaduce Music is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, and we encourage you to apply even if you do not meet every listed qualification.
