Job summary

Zoo New England is seeking an Education Coordinator to support Franklin Park Zoo and community partnerships. The EC will develop curricula, run ZooCamp activities, and train staff and volunteers for interpretive experiences.

The role involves on-site and off-site programming, engagement with families and youth groups, and collaboration with the Education team to ensure high-quality education services year-round.

Qualifications

  • Background knowledge about environmental education and biological sciences.
  • 1 year of practical experience facilitating education in a museum or non-formal setting or summer camp.
  • Knowledge of current teaching trends in environmental education.
  • Ability to address groups of all ages and aptitudes.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team; collaborate with Zoo staff and partners.
  • Excellent computer skills including the Microsoft suite of programs.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification; institutional first responder.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle; personal vehicle may be used for institutional purposes.
  • Able to navigate over uneven terrain and in all weather.

Responsibilities

  • Act as camp coordinator for summer ZooCamp, including instructing camp and supervising staff.
  • Create and facilitate family-focused programs at Franklin Park Zoo.
  • Facilitate on-site and off-site school and scout programs, animal experiences, events, and chats.
  • Train seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns on interpretive programs.
  • Regular hours 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday-Wednesday during the school year; and Monday-Friday during summer camp; occasional evenings.
  • Based at Franklin Park Zoo with weekly travel to Stone Zoo.
  • Other duties assigned by the Education Manager or Education leadership.

Position: Education Coordinator Location: Franklin Park Zoo
Department: Education Reports To: Education Manager
Status: Full-time, exempt position(s)

Essential Job Functions

The Education Coordinator (EC) facilitates education programs hosted at Franklin Park Zoo, including serving as the liaison for community partnership programs such as Countdown to Kindergarten . The EC is integral to the facilitation of the summer ZooCamp program and other camp-related programs during the calendar school year. The primary responsibility of this role is the program curriculum development, operations, and evaluation. As a member of the Education Team, the EC also regularly facilitates other on-site and off-site education programs, chats, and experiences. The Education Coordinator assists in facilitating the development, implementation, and training of staff and volunteers on interpretative interactions and public programs.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Act as camp coordinator for summer ZooCamp, including instructing camp, developing curriculum, the hiring, training and supervision of camp staff, meeting safety requirements for a Massachusetts recreational camp, and some related administrative work.
  • Create and facilitate family-focused programs at Franklin Park Zoo,
  • Facilitate scheduled education programming including on-site and off-site school and scout programs, animal experiences, events, and interpretation/chats.
  • Train seasonal staff, volunteers, and interns on interpretive programs.
  • Regularly scheduled hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday-Wednesday during the school year; and Monday-Friday while summer camp is in session. Occasional evening work will be required.
  • The EC is based at Franklin Park Zoo but travels to Stone Zoo approximately once a week.
  • Other duties assigned by the Education Manager, and in the absence of EM, any other Manger in Education.
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Background knowledge about environmental education and biological sciences
  • 1 year of practical experience facilitating education in a museum or other non-formal setting, classroom teaching experience, or previous summer camp experience.
  • Knowledge of current teaching trends in the environmental education field
  • Ability to address groups of all ages and aptitudes
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and in writing).
  • Able to work independently as well as part of a team; ability to work well with Zoo staff and project partners.
  • Excellent computer skills including the Microsoft suite of programs
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and in writing).
  • Certification in CPR/AED and First Aid; institutional first responder.
  • Valid driver’s license and a driver in good standing with a reliable vehicle; use of personal vehicle for
    institutional purpose as needed.
