Editorial Assistant, Periodicals
Location: Remote
Job Type: Full-Time, 37.5 hours per week
Reports to: Senior Manager, Publications
Salary Range: $29.29 – $37.88 hourly
The Appraisal Institute is a leading professional association for appraisers that empowers valuation professionals through community, credentialing, education, body of knowledge and ethical standards. We are seeking an Editorial Assistant, Periodicals to provide dedicated support and coordination for print and digital periodicals with internal and external contributors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Editorial Assistance
- Proofread and copyedit content relevant to real property appraisers
- Coordinate solicitations, submissions, reviews, and approvals of periodical content by relevant stakeholders throughout the production processes
- Attend weekly periodical production meetings
- Secure copyright permission from authors and columnists
- Support database of content suggestions
- Digital Growth
- Upload files for digital editions and finalize content
- Request updates to the Appraisal Institute website and digital platforms
- Support digital growth for both publications
- Administrative & Organizational Duties
- Generate and manage mailing lists for periodicals and special mailings
- Coordinate launch of print and digital editions and maintain production schedules
- Coordinate with Marketing & Communications to promote new editions of magazines and journals
- Collaborate with Marketing & Communications to secure advertising for the periodicals by deadlines
- Handle copyright registrations, Library of Congress submissions, and reprint requests
- Work with Operations, Customer Service, Finance, and other teams to address subscription questions
- Work with the Lum Library to archive and catalog periodical issues and other content
- Prepare circulation figures for postal audits and other reports as needed
- Support the development of relevant annual budgets for periodicals
- Process invoices and check requests
- Distribute complimentary copies of most recent issues of Valuation magazine and The Appraisal Journal to AI staff, media distribution resellers, and others
- Collaborate with operations to manage USPS issues; coordinate EPS mailing system and Finance interface; file annual USPS statement of ownership for periodicals postage permit
- Maintain relationships with article resellers
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Publishing, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 1–3 years of experience in editorial, publications, or communications support.
- Excellent proofreading, copyediting, and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with AP Style, Chicago Manual of Style, and basic copyright processes.
- Ability to manage digital content uploads, website updates, and mailing lists.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; comfort learning new technologies and platforms.
- Strong project coordination skills and ability to track schedules, budgets, and reports.
- Professional communication skills and ability to collaborate with multiple teams.
- Highly organized, deadline-driven, and self-motivated.
Preferred Qualifications
- Non-profit or association experience.
- Familiarity with real estate or related professional industries.
- Experience supporting circulation audits, copyright registrations, or subscription management.
Physical Requirements:
- Standard office environment.
Travel Requirements:
- Estimated 5% travel may be required.
