Job summary

Ascension Publishing Group is seeking an Editor to guide editorial direction across products. You will coordinate with product development, authors, and contractors to drive milestones from development through launch.

Responsibilities include editing, ghostwriting, budgeting, and ensuring brand consistency while aligning with Ascension’s mission and values. Remote work is offered with occasional travel to Exton, PA for in‑person collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Theology, or 5+ years of equivalent publishing experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to be creative and solve problems.
  • Ghostwriting experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Google Suite.
  • Proficiency in the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Passion for Ascension’s Mission and Values.

Responsibilities

  • Perform developmental writing, editing, ghostwriting, copywriting, proofreading for projects incl. ebooks and video captions.
  • Review materials for style, tone, brand consistency, and theological accuracy.
  • Set up and maintain editorial schedules, budgets, databases, and project systems.
  • Carry out miscellaneous editorial duties including research and responding to inquiries.
  • Participate in creative meetings to shape a product’s editorial direction.
  • Coordinate with project manager to align editorial with product development schedules.
  • Incorporate notes from specialists into manuscripts.
  • Guide independent contractors providing editorial services.
  • Collaborate with offices on imprimatur reviews and USCCB conformity reviews.
  • Maintain editorial consistency across physical, marketing, and digital products via the Ascension Style Guide.

Job description

SUMMARY

The Editor works under the direction of the Associate General Manager and collaborates with other editors across the company, as well as the product development team, to set the editorial direction and vision for products. The Editor works with the product development team and outside authors to create editorial schedules, including key milestones and deadlines, to drive projects efficiently through development, production, and launch. Depending on the needs of a project, the Editor arranges and coordinates with contractors for writing, editing, copywriting, proofreading, and other various contributions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Perform developmental writing, editing (content, developmental, and manuscript), ghostwriting, copywriting, proofing, and other various editorial services as needed on assigned projects - including digital editing of ebooks, Thinkific, and editing captions for video projects.
  • Review of materials as assigned for style, tone, brand consistency, and theological accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform editorial administrative functions, including setting up and maintaining editorial schedules and budgets, maintaining editorial databases and files, maintaining editorial aspects of agreed project management systems, etc.
  • Perform miscellaneous editorial work and duties as assigned, including but not limited to: research, responding to editorial inquiries, reviewing reprints, etc.
  • Participate in creative visioning meetings and collaborate with the product development team to form a vision and framework for a product’s editorial direction.
  • Work closely with the project manager and product development team to align the editorial process with the product development schedule, ensuring editorial tasks are completed on time.
  • Review notes from theological and reading level specialists and incorporate them appropriately into the manuscripts.
  • Collaborate with and guide independent contractors performing editorial services and assess their work.
  • As assigned, work with various Chancery Offices on imprimatur reviews and the USCCB’s Office of the Catechism on conformity reviews.
  • Collaborate with editorial and content teams to ensure editorial consistency across physical products, marketing and promotional collateral, and digital products by maintaining and applying the Ascension Style Guide.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Theology, or 5+ years of equivalent experience in publishing, communications, writing, or editing.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to be creative and think outside the box to solve problems.
  • Ghostwriting experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Google Suite.
  • Proficiency in the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Passion for developing products that align with Ascension’s Mission and Values.
  • This is a remote position, but the ability to travel to the Ascension office in Exton, PA is required.
