The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine seeks an experienced editor to refine reports, articles, and publications, guiding manuscripts through publication while ensuring style, accessibility, and format standards.
You will collaborate with designers, web developers, marketing, and production staff, edit for consistency, and advise on publishing options; supervision of editorial assistants may apply, with freelance coordination as needed.
Edits text and graphics for publication, including articles, manuscripts, reports, websites, journals, magazines, and brochures. Reads and evaluates reports and other materials to determine editorial problems, inconsistencies, and areas for improvement. Guides authors on treatment of material, reorganizes, cuts, or rewrites as needed, and ensures compliance with organizational and unit style, content, accessibility, and format standards. Works with editorial and production staff and contractors to guide manuscripts through to publication. May also contribute original material and write on topics for diverse audiences in multiple media formats.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, including track changes and styles.
• Practical knowledge of WordPress or other content management systems, HTML, and CSS desired.
• Ability to solve complex problems, serve as a resource to others, and exercise independent judgment.
• Ability to work successfully in a team environment and develop relationships with colleagues.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field, or equivalent knowledge and experience.
Minimum Experience
Three years of related professional experience.
Physical Capabilities
Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls
Reports to Director or higher editorial position; may supervise junior staff.
Estimated compensation range: $73,760 - $92,190, based on relevant knowledge, skills, and experience. This is a benefits‑eligible position. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, disability, retirement, paid holidays, paid personal leave, transportation subsidies, and education assistance.
Hybrid Office/Telecommute: 60% onsite with occasional travel to National Academies facilities and off‑site meetings.
