Job summary

SRMC Summersville Regional Medical Center is seeking a patient care assistant to support nursing staff in daily operational duties. The role includes direct patient care, documentation, and clerical tasks to maintain patient flow and safety.

The position requires a high school diploma, BLS within 90 days, and at least 1 year of related experience. Notary Public credential helpful and may be pursued within 6 months of hire. Shift is varied, and the role is non-exempt.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Performs direct patient care as assigned, using sound judgment and required skills.
  • Reports observations directly to the nurse.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living.
  • Documents in the Electronic Medical Record per policy.
  • Performs clerical tasks (computer, copier, fax, phones) as needed.
  • Maintains patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates competency in technical skills and daily checks.
  • Answers call bells according to hospital standards.
  • Uses equipment appropriately.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate/equivalent.
  • BLS certification within 90 days of hire.
Experience
  • One (1) year of patient care assistant experience and or clerical experience
Preferred Qualifications

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

  • Post high school business or secretarial or computer training.
  • Medical terminology knowledge.
  • Notary Public for the State of West Virginia or obtain within 6 months of hire date and keep it up-to-date.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs direct patient care as assigned, applying good judgment and knowledge of skills required within the realm of job responsibility 100 % of the time.
  • Reports all pertinent observations and concerns directly to the nurse 100 % of the time.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assist patients with activities of daily living.
  • Documents in the Electronic Medical Record as per policy 100 % of the time.
  • Performs clerical skills including use of computer, copier, fax, phones, etc., 100 % of the time.
  • Maintains patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality 100 % of the time.
  • Demonstrates competency in technical skills, completes skills checklist, and correctly performs these skills daily as required.
  • Answers call bells according to hospital standards.
  • Uses equipment appropriately.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling are necessary body movements utilized in performing nursing duties throughout the work shift.
  • Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds.
  • Visual acuity must be within normal range.
  • Hearing within normal range is required (i.e.: to assess breath sounds, bowel sounds, apical pulse, monitors, etc.).
  • Must be able to read and write legibly in English.
  • Must be able to lift, move, and position patients of all weights, with varying amounts of assistance in affair manner on a regular and recurring basis.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • Exposure to body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, sharps, and explosive gases.
  • Exposure to cleaning agents and disinfectants.

  • Exposure to electrical current.
  • Exposure to radiation from x-rays.
