Job summary

UPMC Altoona is seeking a Patient Care Technician I (Part-Time) for the Emergency Department. The role involves hands-on patient care, assisting nurses, and contributing to a compassionate, efficient clinical environment.

Evening/night shifts rotate with weekends/holidays; 12- and 8-hour shifts total ~20 hours/week, with union employment. Requirements include year-round availability and dayshift orientation availability.

Qualifications

• Must have year-round availability and dayshift availability for orientation/training purposes.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse, including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulation, transportation, and other activities of daily living.
• Monitor and report changes in patient condition to the RN and assist with responding to patient needs and emergent situations within the scope of the nursing assistant role.
• Obtain and document routine patient information, such as vital signs, blood glucose readings, intake and output, and patient weights, according to established procedures.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment by completing safety checks, cleaning equipment, changing linens, stocking supplies, and keeping patient care areas orderly.
• Support patient comfort and wellbeing by delivering meals and nourishments, refilling water pitchers, distributing mail, and providing one-on-one supervision or companionship when needed.
• Assist with the use of patient care equipment and supplies, including stocking, ordering, and distributing items necessary for patient care.
• Apply, monitor, and remove restraints as directed by physician orders or hospital policy and provide diversion activities to help reduce restraint use.
• Collaborate effectively with patients, families, nurses, and other team members while maintaining professional and respectful interpersonal relationships.
• Adhere to all hospital policies, confidentiality standards, infection prevention practices, and safety procedures.
• Contribute to the overall success of the unit by responding to call lights and phones, assisting coworkers, transporting patients, participating in continuous learning, and supporting departmental improvements.
