Job summary

GBMC HealthCare in Baltimore, MD seeks a Registration Clerk to support Emergency Department admissions and outpatient registrations. You will interview patients, verify insurance, collect co-pays, enter data into Epic and other systems, and provide excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED, strong typing, teamwork, and the ability to work with confidential information and high-stress situations. Training will be provided.

Under general supervision, interviews Emergency Department patients to obtain necessary information, prepare admission/registration forms, gather insurance information and perform other clerical/computer operational tasks related to the admission of inpatients and outpatients coming into our Medical Center.Education:High School Diploma or GEDLicensures/Certifications:CHAA PreferredExperience:1 to 2 years related experience preferred. 6 months to 1 year working in an Emergency Department preferred. Completion of a Medical Terminology class preferred.Skills:Responsible for interviewing patients that are experiencing a medical emergency.Ability to work calmly and efficiently in high-stress situationsStrong ability to work well on a team with rotating staff.Knowledge of insurance coverage and billing, collection procedures, laws, rules, and regulationsKnowledge in medical terminology preferredSkill in using computers and personal productivity applicationsSkill in oral and written communication, including reading comprehensionSkill in data analysis to gather and update statistics, logs, records and reportsAbility to type quickly and accuratelyExcellent skill in customer service techniquesAbility to multi-task and prioritizeMust be able to work in a patient care environment with exposure to infection and/or contagious diseasePrincipal Duties and Responsibilities:Completes Arrival and Registration functions for patients presenting for immediate life-threatening illness or injury, emergency petition, sexual assault, psych evaluation and substance abuseUse of standard precautions to prevent exposure to blood and/or body fluids exposureFollows EMTALA regulations related to registration and collection of co-payments in the Emergency DeptPerforms bed-side registrations for ER patients, patients directly admitted to the hospital and for Skilled Nursing Facility/ Sub-acute unit admissions. Ensures complete and accurate information is obtained bedside from the patient, from a family member, or from the sending facilityExtensive insurance knowledge for accurate insurance entry for new and out of state patients, patients presenting for auto andworkers compensation injury, and other liability situationsDocuments point of origin, sending facility and referral source for patients arriving from other health care facilities, maintaining accuracy of patient records and compliance with the HSCRCResponsible for registration of after-hour Radiology patientsVerifies demographic and insurance information. Obtains all necessary signatures electronically, or on paper. Collects anypayments due upon admission and assures insurance verification process is completedInform patients of Medical Center rates, rules and regulations and answers patients’ questions. If unable to answer questions, investigates all avenues available to resolve concerns. Works as a team with clinical staff from all OR’s, Emergency Department, Maternal/Newborn Health, Clinics, and Ancillary Testing areasInputs patient information into computer to identify existing, or initiate new medical record, patients’ labels, and bracelets. Scans at time of registration all insurance cards, Photo I.D., Advance Directives and other facility information. Obtains photographs of patients for identification purposes. Obtains electronic signature of various registration forms such as Permissions and Acknowledgements, and Notice of Observation to Inpatient Status Change. Escorts patient to waiting room location as neededMeets or exceeds departmental registration timing standard of 7 minutes per patientVerifies benefits via Epic Real-Time Eligibility. Follows insurance requirements such as Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire. Enters insurance coverage accurately. Provides notification to insurance carriers as requiredAssists in training new employees for the department. Performs clerical duties, computer operational duties, filing, record keeping, answering phones and providing excellent customer service. Handles security keycard distribution for VIP’s at L&DMeets or exceeds registration accuracy of 97%- evaluated on a quarterly basisCollects co-pays, deductibles, out of pocket, and balance due payments via check or credit card.
