Job summary

The Atlanta Botanical Garden seeks a Research Scientist, Ecology to join the southeastern Center for Conservation (SECC) within the Department of Conservation & Research. The role leads applied ecological research to conserve rare plants and restore habitats in the southeastern United States.

Responsibilities include developing research programs, translating findings into conservation strategies, collaborating with partners, and mentoring interns and staff.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in ecology, conservation biology, plant biology, botany, restoration ecology, natural resources, or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated record of designing, conducting, analyzing, and publishing original ecological or conservation research.
• Expertise in rare-plant conservation, population ecology, demography, restoration ecology, reintroduction biology, or population viability.
• Strong quantitative and analytical skills and experience with ecological datasets.
• Ability to develop and manage collaborative research or conservation projects.
• Experience obtaining or contributing to externally funded research or conservation programs.
• Record of peer-reviewed publications and strong scientific writing.

Responsibilities

• Lead applied ecological research to advance conservation and habitat restoration of rare plants.
• Develop research questions, experimental designs, monitoring approaches, and analyses.
• Translate ecological analyses into indicators, monitoring, and decision-support tools.
• Develop externally and internally funded research programs and grant proposals.
• Manage grant-supported projects, partnerships, budgets, milestones, reporting.
• Disseminate research via peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and outreach.
• Collaborate with universities, agencies, gardens, and conservation networks.
• Mentor interns and early-career researchers.
