Primary Purpose

The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Specialist (ES) ensures appropriate patient care through continuous monitoring of the ECMO circuit, related technology, and patient status. The ES assesses patient and circuit status, identifies and corrects problems, and initiates interventions per protocol. They consult with the ECMO physician when needed and work closely with the healthcare team to provide patient-centered care in accordance with the care plan.

Minimum Specifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in a related specialty.
Experience
  • At least 3 years of critical care experience; preference for over 6 years.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
  • Current, valid RN license or temporary RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing, or a valid Compact RN license, OR
  • Licensed Perfusionist, OR
  • Licensed Respiratory Therapist.
  • Current healthcare provider CPR certification from AHA, Red Cross, or Military Training Network.
  • Current ALS or ACLS certification from AHA, Red Cross, or Military Training Network.
Skills or Special Abilities
  • Ability to serve as a clinical resource for staff.
  • Expertise in their field of study.
Responsibilities
  • Collect and assess data collaboratively to provide therapeutic care.
  • Monitor and adjust ECMO circuit settings to maintain parameters.
  • Infuse blood products, fluids, and medications per protocol.
  • Assess cardiovascular status via test results and physical exam.
  • Perform patient assessments to anticipate and prevent problems.
  • Verify and implement physician orders, monitor drug interactions.
  • Manage fluids and maintain accurate intake/output records.
  • Use ACT values to assess clotting and adjust heparin infusion accordingly.
  • Evaluate chest x-rays for tube placement and lung status, support cannula patency.
  • Support research through data collection and documentation.
  • Identify issues, develop plans, and evaluate outcomes.
  • Commit to quality and excellence, solving problems through critical evaluation and continuous improvement.
