ECMO Perfusionist

Join to apply for the ECMO Perfusionist role at Epic Staffing Group.

Epic Cardiovascular Services is seeking a highly‑motivated Board Certified (ABCP) Perfusionist to focus on ECMO care at a renowned Washington, DC hospital with more than 200 ECMO cases per year. The candidate will join a staff of five specialized ECMO personnel.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

A. The duties of the ECLS Perfusionist include, but are not limited to:

1. Operate the extracorporeal circuit, pump, and related equipment.
2. Manage the ongoing process of healthcare delivery to patients and families per institutional policies.
3. Participate in patient rounds and make suggestions to the Physician and ECLS team after assessing patient responses to ECLS therapy.
4. Review laboratory and blood gas results and treat within defined protocols prescribed by the physician in charge.
5. Adjust the circuit—including pump flow, gas exchange, hemofiltration, anticoagulation therapy, or other parameters—to maintain the patient within limitations set by the ECLS physician.
6. Troubleshoot the ECLS circuit and make replacements of circuit components as indicated, usually in the presence of institutional Perfusionists and Physicians.
7. Assist in data collection and research activities associated with the institution or EPIC.
8. Attend ongoing classes at the specific institution and/or EPIC related to ECLS services.

B. Specific and ancillary responsibilities of the ECLS Perfusionist:

1. Accurately assess pathophysiological changes within the patient during bypass.
2. Manage ECMO flow in relationship to patient management parameters.
3. Perform all technical skills with efficiency, accuracy, and safety, in accordance with institutional and EPIC policy and procedures.
4. Operate all equipment according to policy and procedure, differentiating patient vs. patient problems and intervening appropriately.
5. Implement standing physician orders within established guidelines.
6. Anticipate, intervene, and manage crisis/emergency situations according to policy and procedure; maintain professional composure.
7. Demonstrate effective assessment of the ECLS circuit.
8. Perform, manage, and troubleshoot anticoagulation per institutional protocol.
9. Demonstrate proper blood sampling techniques from the ECLS circuit.
10. Document all ECMO records, including OnCloud EMR.
11. Administer all blood products into the ECLS circuit.
12. Manage laboratory results and perform appropriate interventions as related by ECLS therapy.
13. Assess clinical status of the patient, including vital signs, and discuss possible intervention.
14. Provide feedback for improved patient outcomes to other care providers.
15. Assimilate information and then provide documentation of the interventions that produce the chosen integrated plan of care.
16. Anticipate and communicate patient needs that will require intervention by other members of the care team.
17. Assist others in defining learning outcomes and appropriate interventions.
18. Use innovation in individualizing patient/family teaching to the individual patient/family needs.
19. Participate in patient management discussions and suggest clinical management options during discussions.
20. Maintain qualification licensure as per licensure requirements.
21. Maintain communication within institutional and Epic standards and policies for delivery of ECLS care.
22. Maintain competencies in current topics of ECLS through institutional journals, Internet, and networking with care providers of similar nature.
23. Show punctuality, professional respect to all other team members, and professional behavior at all times.

C. Personal demands on the ECLS Perfusionist include:

1. Participate in “on‑call” scheduling, 24/7, throughout the year.
2. Carry a pager or cell phone during “on‑call” times and be available to respond within the designated call response time of the hospital.
3. Maintain good physical condition.
4. Endure long hours, both mentally and physically.
5. Stand for long periods of time, lift, stoop, sit, stretch, and perform other bodily demands for extended intervals.
6. Be exposed to noxious gases and bodily fluids with risk of infections and diseases.
7. Remain current on present perfusion technology procedures, techniques, and literature.
8. Establish and maintain a professional demeanor.
9. Re‑enforce the integrity of Epic CV Services.
10. Serve in a supportive capacity for all clinical accounts relative to vacation relief, sick leave, and temporary staffing when directed.

Candidates should also possess the following:
