SUMMARY AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: At the direction of the Medical Director and Manager of Cardiopulmonary Services, performs and documents all adult echocardiograms to include 2-D Echo, Continuous Wave Doppler, Pulsed Wave Doppler, Color Doppler, Stress Echo, Dobutamine Stress Echo, and assists with Transesophegael Echo. Works with quality inventory control, shares responsibility for the daily function of the echo department.
Included in the job duties is responsibility for preparing patients and diagnostic equipment for imaging procedures and explanation of procedures to patients and assistance of the LRH Cardiologists with interpretation the data from the images and determination of which images should be saved and which should be discarded. Echo Tech is also responsible for ensuring that records are kept properly.
REPORTS TO: Director, Diagnostic and Cardiac Imaging
SUPERVISES: None
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS: Medical Staff, hospital Staff, ancillary personnel, Nursing Staff, patients and their family members, and sales representatives, all people associated with LRH, and other hospitals.
QUALIFICATIONS: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) with CCI or within one year of eligibility. Must have at least 3 years experience performing echocardiograms. Experience with intravenous access preferred, or to be obtained within 90 days of employment. BCLS certification required, ACLS certification recommended.
Experience/Specialized Skills: Performance Description:
- The employee must introduce him/herself to the patient. Obtain a brief history on why the patient has come to the echo lab to have this examination. The employee must explain procedure to the patient.
- Perform echocardiograms according to established procedures. The employee must evaluate pictures and reposition the probe and or patient to get the best possible images for physician interpretation. The employee must be able to recognize arrhythmias and implications of specific cardiac and related diagnoses to obtain optimal studies and operate complex equipment accordingly.
- Assist physicians in Transesophageal, exercise stress echocardiograms, and Dobutamine stress echocardiograms.
- Measure, edit, and perform a preliminary interpretation report of all performed echocardiography procedures. Enter data into computer; distinguish between normal and abnormal findings and review them with a physician with LRH approved privileges for reading of Echocardiography.
- Maintain and order all necessary clinical and/or office supplies for the Echo Lab
- Must keep up to date with the latest developments in the field of Echocardiography by way of literature and/or conferences.
- Keep Echo equipment in proper working order, including scheduling preventive maintenance as per industry standards
- Responsible for performing all requirements for ICAEL accreditation to include quality assurance.
- May meet with vendors to review cost containment and service contracts, evaluate potential equipment purchases per MD preferences and/or recommended guidelines
- Maintain service contract requirements and schedule service for Echo related equipment as necessary
- Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Preferred Certification/Registration: Specialized certifications specifically for echo technicians include the Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer certification from ARDMS

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works in a clean, well-lighted and ventilated area. Is subject to communicable diseases and disagreeable orders occasionally; Is subject to radiation exposure, electrical hazards, and toxic and/or teratogenic substances occasionally. May be subject to environmental changes.
