Qualifications

The Ultrasound Technologist operates ultrasound equipment, performs various technical procedures, and is responsible for patient care in the area. This position requires population-specific competencies.

Qualifications

One of the following is needed:

  • Current certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (must obtain current ARRT Sonography certification within the first 90 days of hire).
  • The ability to obtain current RDMS, RDCS, or RVT certification within 12 months of hire through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

Diagnostic Cardiology Only:

  • Will also accept Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) registry.

Breast Imaging Centers only:

  • Current certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (Breast Sonography) for Mammography techs only performing breast sonography.
  • Successful completion of an Allied Health post-secondary education program that is patient-care related OR equivalent experience.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Current CPR certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English (written/verbal).

Diagnostic Cardiology:

  • Will also accept Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) registry.

Lakeside Women's Hospital:

  • Knowledge of preparing and sterilizing surgical instruments and supplies preferred.
Responsibilities

The Ultrasound Technologist responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs general ultrasound procedures
  • Performs 2D, pulsed wave Doppler, color flow Doppler evaluations on the upper and lower extremities for both the arterial and venous systems, visceral vascular, and carotid imaging
  • Reviews in-patient requisitions and prioritizes patient list based on severity of illness, special procedures, requests, and equipment availability; revises schedule as needed
  • Develops film by automatic processing promptly; manipulates laser printer and processor for high-quality images
  • Performs daily quality control checks and generates monthly reports
  • Manages procurement, storage, and routing of supplies
  • Ensures sterilization of instruments and proper storage

For Echocardiographers:

  • Performs echocardiography on adults and pediatric patients
  • Performs peripheral vascular procedures

For Lakeside Women's Hospital:

  • Prepares and documents sterilization processes
  • Completes high-level disinfectant process education annually

For Breast Sonographers:

  • Performs breast ultrasound procedures
  • Reviews prior imaging, acquires clinical history, and correlates findings
  • Optimizes exams using Doppler, color Doppler, panoramic imaging
  • Assists radiologists with interventional procedures
  • Operates radiographic equipment if ARRT registry in Mammography and Radiology is held

The Ultrasound Technologist reports to the Lead Technologist and/or Manager/Director. This role involves physical demands and respiratory fit testing; refer to the Physical Demands Project SharePoint or Risk Management/Employee Health for details. Exposure to equipment, fumes, contagious patients, radiation, and biohazards is possible. The work may include irregular hours, emergency callbacks, and working in dark rooms up to 60% of the time.
