Position Summary

The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) at Michigan State University (MSU) is a dynamic, state-of-the-art emergency and specialty teaching hospital located on MSUs beautiful campus. The VMC offers 24/7 emergency and critical care services and board-certified specialty care for both small and large animals, integrating the latest technology with cutting-edge research to provide outstanding patientcare. We are seeking a Veterinary Nurse Supervisor to join our Small Animal Emergency and ICU team. This individual will play a critical role in delivering high-quality patient care while supporting the hospitals service, teaching, and research missions.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care (approximately 75% of the time), performing all duties expected of Veterinary Nurse I and II roles.
• Coordinate the day-to-day operations of the Emergency and ICU departments.
• Supervise, hire, and train assigned nursing staff.
• Create and maintain staff schedules; approve time off requests.
• Ensure adequate staffing levels to support patient care needs.
• Oversee performance management processes, including evaluations and corrective actions.
• Facilitate effective communication related to patient and client care.
• Resolve performance, workflow, and operational concerns.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.

Work Schedule

Primary shift is third shift. Flexibility to work weekends and day shifts as needed.

Minimum Requirements

• Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school with coursework in Veterinary Technology; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in patient care, surgery, drug dosing and sterilization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
• licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan, or attainment of such certification within one year of date of employment.

Desired Qualifications

• Three to five years as an Emergency and/or Critical Care Licensed Veterinary Technician preferably within a hospital teaching setting.
• Demonstrated level of emotional intelligence in a high stress work environment.
• Prior supervision preferred.
