Job summary

Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine seeks an ICU Veterinary Assistant to support the Small Animal Emergency Medicine Unit on a full-time basis. You will monitor vitals, assist clinicians and staff, and help with lab processing and medication orders.

The role includes walking animals, keeping wards clean, stocking supplies, and entering charges in the hospital information system. First, second, and third shifts are available.

Qualifications

• High school education or equivalent with 6 months to 1 year veterinary practice experience.
• Typing and basic computer skills.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Monitor temperature, pulse, and respiration of animal patients.
• Walk animals outside and maintain ward cleanliness.
• Process lab samples and medication orders; enter charges in HIS.
• Assist clinicians, veterinary technicians and students with patients.
• Stock supplies and maintain ward areas for the Small Animal Emergency Medicine Unit.

Position Summary

The successful candidate will work on animal patients; monitors temperature, pulse and respiration; monitors IV fluid administration; will walk animals outside; will clean ward areas, stock supplies; will process lab samples and medication orders; enters charges in the hospital information system; assists clinicians, veterinary technicians and clinical students with animal patients in the Small Animal Emergency Medicine Unit of the Veterinary Medical Center.

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge normally acquired through a high school education; six months to one year of related work experience in a veterinary practice, maintaining accurate records, typing and basic computer skills; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with general handling of cats and dogs; knowledge of animal restraint for blood collection and IV catheter placement; positioning for X-rays and IV fluid monitoring; previous exposure to monitoring equipment such as IV fluid pumps, EKG, Pulse oximeter and Doppler blood pressure.
