Job summary

Stokes County Schools, Walnut Cove Elementary – Walnut Cove, North Carolina.

Job Title: Exceptional Children’s Teacher.

Starting Date: Aug 5, 2026. 10‑month position, 7.5 hours per day, full‑time with benefits.

Under general supervision, provides special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations. Responsible for developing and implementing Individual Education Programs (IEPs) in classroom settings that are compatible with each student’s age and developmental level. Develops lesson plans, adapts materials, designs activities to help students develop appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills, and meets IEP goals. Reports to the principal.

Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements instructional plans compatible with school and systemwide curricular goals and student IEPs.
  • Develops, implements, and updates Individual Education Programs (IEPs) using diagnostic information.
  • Provides direct special education instruction to identified students.
  • Employs a variety of teaching methods and adapts materials as needed.
  • Monitors student behavior, maintains classroom discipline, deescalates inappropriate behaviors, restrains students when necessary, and records and reports restraints.
  • Assists disabled students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks.
  • Communicates with parents via periodic written progress reports.
  • Acts as a case coordinator for assigned students, consulting with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents.
  • Performs other related work as required.
Qualifications and Standards
  • Must hold a degree in special education and certification in at least one area of disability as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to use classroom tools and equipment, exert negligible force frequently or constantly to move objects, and meet light‑work physical standards.
  • Data Conception: Ability to compare and judge observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data and people.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak, signal, and receive instructions, assignments, and directions from superiors.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read various documents, prepare correspondence and reports in prescribed format.
  • Intelligence: Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking, interpret technical instructions, and handle abstract and concrete variables.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and communicate efficiently in professional terminology.
  • Numerical Aptitude: Ability to use mathematical formulas, perform arithmetic operations, utilize decimals and percentages, and apply descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper size and shape.
  • Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
  • Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle various items such as office equipment and hand tools with minimal coordination levels.
  • Color Discrimination: Ability to differentiate colors and shades.
  • Interpersonal Temperament: Ability to handle people, adapt to stress, and respond to emergency situations.
  • Physical Communication: Ability to talk and hear, and communicate via telephone.

  • Constantly monitor student safety and well‑being during inclusive activities.

  • Maintain a clean and orderly environment.
