Job Description

Employment in this position is effective August 13, 2026. Candidates must be eligible for a teaching license in NC.

Under general supervision, provide special education services to students identified as disabled in accordance with state and federal regulations. Work involves developing and implementing Individual Education Programs (IEPs) in classroom settings compatible with student age and developmental level. The Exceptional Children’s Teacher is responsible for developing lesson plans, adapting materials, and designing activities to support academic, behavioral, and social skill development and to meet IEP goals. The teacher monitors student progress and maintains records in compliance with state and federal guidelines. Reports to the principal.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement an instructional plan that aligns with school and system‑wide curricular goals and each student’s IEP.
  • Develop, implement, and update Individual Education Programs (IEPs) using diagnostic information from assessments.
  • Deliver direct special‑education instruction to identified students.
  • Employ a variety of teaching methods and adapt or develop materials to meet student needs.
  • Monitor student behavior, maintain classroom discipline, deescalate inappropriate behaviors, teach appropriate behavioral strategies, restrain students when necessary, and record and report restraints.
  • Assist students with personal and self‑help needs such as eating, toileting, and other essential tasks.
  • Communicate with parents regarding children’s educational progress through periodic written progress reports.
  • Act as a case coordinator for assigned students, consulting with community caregivers, school support professionals, and parents.
  • Maintain student records in accordance with North Carolina’s Procedures Governing Programs and Services for Children with Disabilities and comply with state and federal statutes.
  • Treat all students fairly and equitably, interacting effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
  • Follow a plan for professional development and demonstrate evidence of growth.
  • Perform other related work as required.
Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in special education and certification in at least one area of disability as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required
  • Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools, including computers and specialized equipment for children with special needs.
  • Must be able to exert negligible force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects; consistent with light work.
  • Requires ability to compare evidence, judge data, and interpret technical instructions.
  • Must communicate effectively, speak, listen, and use professional terminology.
  • Must read, write, prepare reports, and follow instructions.
  • Requires logical and scientific thinking, ability to analyze variables, and apply statistical principles.
  • Must coordinate hand and eye movements, handle office equipment, and maintain manual dexterity.
  • Must discriminate colors, adapt to stress, and communicate via telephone.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Constantly monitor student safety and well‑being, especially during inclusive activities.
  • Motivate students and maintain a clean, orderly environment.
  • Perform general clerical duties and maintain basic files and records.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships as required.
