Reporting To

Job Goal

Assist the teacher by monitoring and supporting special‑needs students in the classroom and during other activities to ensure the provision of quality instruction in a safe environment.

Qualifications

• A Child Development Associate (CDA) credential; or have completed at least 48 semester college credit hours toward an Associate Degree or higher in birth‑through‑kindergarten, child development, early childhood education, or a related field.
• NC license to drive a school bus, or the ability to obtain one.
• Other qualifications that the board may deem appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Follow all rules, policies, and procedures of Carteret County Public Schools and state and federal regulations pertaining to special education.
• Administer scores and records of achievement and diagnostic tests as recommended by the teacher.
• Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher; create and modify materials to match student abilities.
• Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual student needs, interests, and abilities.
• Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes; help students master such equipment.
• Monitor student behavior and assist in maintaining discipline; record time‑outs and in‑class suspensions; assist with crisis prevention and de‑escalation techniques as needed.
• Assist with delivery of special services, daily living skills, feeding and toileting students when necessary, and other tasks students are unable to perform for themselves as directed by the supervising teacher.
• Continuously monitor the safety and well‑being of students; encourage self‑esteem and monitor student attitudes.
• Collaborate with the teacher to incorporate information from parents, doctors, nurses, therapists, and others to understand student needs and provide services.
• Perform clerical duties as needed: maintain records of student progress; develop and file incident reports; grade student papers; check daily attendance; make copies; distribute materials; develop classroom displays and instructional material; maintain audiovisual equipment; maintain class files.
• Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
• Strive to maintain and improve professional competence; participate in the development and support of the special education program.
• Serve as the chief source of information and assistance for any substitute teacher in the regular teacher’s absence.
• Obtain and hold a School Bus Driver’s License and drive a school bus when requested.
• Serve as a school bus monitor when requested.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as requested by the teacher and/or principal.

Terms of Employment

Ten‑month year, at‑will, FLSA Non‑Exempt.
